Decided to jump head first into the cheap diesel heater land. Of course the standard tank that. Ones with the unit I didn’t like so I’m upgrading and will be plumbing the fill through the wall. So all in the fuel system will end up costing more than the heater. But once it’s complete it will be great. No worries about spilling fuel in the trailer.
Still waiting on a few parts for the fuel system so today I decided to get the heater in place. After watching multiple install videos I decided that my original plan wasn’t the best idea.
Originally I wanted to mount the unit up higher. This would’ve put the exhaust connection in the trailer and that just isn’t safe. If the connection is loose exhaust could enter the trailer. Also the exhaust is super hot. I determined it needed to be mounted through the floor so the exhaust connection was outside.
The unit came with a floor mounting plate. Thin galvanized metal. I considered buying the fancy webasto plate. I also considered picking up some plate steel and making my own. Ultimately I opted to just use the provided plate. If it doesn’t work out I’ll fab my own.
First step was to lay things out in the trailer. Once I did that I crawled under he trailer and realized that the tongue A frame was not going to allow me to drill through the floor where I wanted too. Back to the drawing board!
New spot, no obstructions. I was going to drill out holes to match the plate but it’s recommended to drill one big hole. In my case 4” hole,saw was the proper size. This gives enough clearance for the exhaust. I did drill two other holes. One for the fuel line to return back into the trailer. The other for the air intake. I didn’t want the air intake outside under the trailer.
I got everything drilled and went about getting everything in place. All was well until I went to run the air intake line back into the trailer. I used the wrong spade bit. I used the 1” and should’ve used the 1 1/4” . As many know if you drill a hole with spade bit or hole saw and need to make it larger that’s an issue. A quick fix is to attach a thin piece of plywood and then drill from the other side with the original bit just until the point pops thru. Then change the bit and drill from the plywood side. They new hole in the plywood will keep the larger bit where it needs to be.
Should have the rest of my parts here this week and hope to have it up,and running as we plan on camping next weekend.
