2000 Watt Generator for my Air Conditioner?

Postby Gerdo » Thu Aug 03, 2006 11:04 pm

I am wondering if anyone has used a Honda 2000is Generator to run their 6000btu AC unit. The AC requires a 15 amp circuit and 2000 watts is 16.6 amps. The big question is will Geni handle the start surge of the AC unit?

Gerdo, everything I have read on the subject indicates that the 2000w Honda should do the job just fine....... 8)

I have a Kipor 2000, it runs my 5000btu window shaker fine. I haven't tried the Nuker and window shaker at the same time though.

For those who are still wondering why I brought a decibel meter camping. I wanted to compare the noise of my Kipor to the Honda generators. It wasn't a scientific comparison because I only measured with my arms, and there were objects that reflected the sound.

The Kipor was within one decibel of the comparable Honda, but the sound was totally different. Not enough of a difference when taking the measurement conditions into account. The suprise came when I measured the 3000 Honda at the cook shack. I thought it was extremely quiet but when I measured it, it was actually louder. I think the difference was that it had a lower pitch.

Rocky,

How loud was the 2000eu and do you think it would cause neighbors to complain in a state campground?

I wonder if generators are even allowed in state campgrounds. That's something I have to look up when I get a chance.

It is all relative. This afternoon I was running the generator to burn all the gas out of it. During the day it seems very quiet because ambient noise floor was much higher, cars driving by, air conditioners running, etc. When I ran it the night before we left, it seemd nosier because it was the only thing in the whole neighborhood making noise.

I've heard contractor generators at parks. He was several sites away and it was still loud to us. In most parks, I think there are certain times when generators are not allowed.

Rocky,

I'm sure you know this, but others may not...for a dB meter to produce accurate and camparable data, the sound pressure reading must be taken at the exact same distance away from the sound source, at the exact same height above ground, and with no sound reflecting surfaces close to the source.
