Camp Toliet Recommendations?

Postby Caradoc » Thu Aug 17, 2006 12:53 am

I have been enlightened -- in a search to find ways to better organize my camping trips, I've run into the wonderfulness of the teardrop trailer. I've spent lots of hours pouring over the resources here (the Benroy plans are great!), and I think I've got a very interesting winter project.

In the meantime...

I'm tired of slimy camp toliets and the odd echo of pit toilets, and after years of resisting, I'm at going to start packing my own porta-potty of some sort. Surely, the great people on this board have some input as to which brands/types are worth something, and which are just, well, crap.

I've already found the thread that highly recommended the Cabela shower shelter, and if it's easy and quick to set up, I'm set to go with that.

Does anybody have pointers for a portable toliet?

I have used the Thetford brand for years...read their specs and choose one that is properly sized for your use...personally I would go with the largest non-electric flushing model...put some water in it along with the deodorant before using and you will be satified with the results

We can't have a thread about toilets without a reference to this.

Not sure if Sears still sells them but I have a toilet from sears probably the same as the one Camping World sells http://www.campingworld.com/browse/prod ... 7&src=SRQB and use it inside the Cabelas privacy shelter. We used it alot on our trip to the IRG 2006 gathering.

The PETT with a booster step for the taller folk who would rather not "proceed" with their knees in their ears.

PETT stowed in the booster step.

Privacy tent from Sportsman's Guide http://www.sportsmansguide.com is a shower tent also.

The BumperDumper not withstanding, it seems like the Thetford is the main brand, but the PETT seems to be a new runner-up (along with Luggable Loo's, ammo boxes, and a trash bag with kitty litter).

It also seems to come to a question if you want to be disposing of wet or dry waste. The Thetfords, as I understand it, have a nice little spout which makes it a bit easier to empty, and hopefully not as discusting after a crowd of people using it over a weekend.

You don't necessarily have to empty the PETT bags, since everybody would handle their own bag. But at $2/bag, this can get a little steep. But then, what kind of price can you put on a nice place to take a dump. :)

(I mention multiple people -- we're a family of 4, but I've also notice that friends tend to also use porti-pottys if there's one available).

Do these toliets have their own problems with them?

My favorite 'dumpster' is this one. Certainly find a campground with decent facility eliminates some
of the crap we have to put up with :o

I did notice and increase in the number of those tent pottie setups that dmb90260 mentioned, around the campground.

I like my Reliance Hassock Portable Toilet
http://tinyurl.com/h4u97
but I hate the blue stuff you're suppose to use with it. We use kitty litter and heavy duty tall kitchen trash bags. No smell, it's sturdy and doubles as a stool when the lid is on. We keep it in the corner of our SportZ side tent, handy for putting on your shoes in the morning.

I'll put up with dirty bathrooms even if I have to clean a spot for myself. Because when I walk away, it is no longer my problem. Carrying a bathroom around doesn't sound fun yuck. Where do you put it? in the tear (where you sleep) in the galley (where you cook) or inside the car (well, you know).

Not knocking you guys, you gotta do what you gotta do. If the other half wanted one, I'm shure I'll have to find answers to where to pack it.

I've been kidding myself because I've seemed to have become a wimp in using some public bathrooms, and maybe the solution is just to get over it. I could argue that it's for my wife and kids, but really, it's for me. Every man should have a clean throne.

Maybe the solution is just to carry some TP, some butt gaskets, and a bit of hand santizer in a pack. Because you're right, after you're done with a public toilet, you're done.

Now where did I see that 'pottie' that attached to the bumper of your care at just the right height for 'business'...

Anyone remember that one?
