How about a big market umbrella for shade?

Postby Duane King » Sun Sep 10, 2006 11:22 pm

Everybody likes those E-Z up shelters for shade and rain protection. I may get one myself if I can get over the fact that they seem a bit modern when camping in a tear.

But what about using a great big market umbrella? I wonder if a bracket could be welded up and bolted to the side of the trailer near the galley so that all you have to do is drop the umbrella pole into the socket and you're good to go. No stakes, no ropes, just a pole in a bracket. Well, maybe a pin through the pole into the bracket. Waddayathink? Is somebody already doing this.

Maybe you could use small matching umbrellas over the entry doors to the sleeping cabin. This could provide shade in the day and maybe rain protection.

Most market umbrellas seem to be canvas and they would be heavy and maybe not too waterproof. But this idea seems to have merit. Unless the wind really picks up and rips those brackets right off of the side of the trailer! But I think it would work great. . .Maybe in a wind, you could just take it down. Anyway, waddayathink?

I suppose it would be fine as long as the poles come apart so it isn't too long.

About umbrellas

Postby stbuch » Mon Sep 11, 2006 5:57 am

We have used umbrellas over the years when tent camping. They are good unless you have a high wind or a thunderstorm. Then you spend most of your time chasing it across the campground. I am sure it could be secured but the wind would still probably turn it inside out.

In my humble opinion, after 30 years of camping, the EZ up is one of the best inventions ever!

I used one until I got my awning made. The worst part of it was the surprisingly large amount of space that heavy iron base took up in my truck bed!

We use one at the beach. I just drive a PVC pipe in the sand.

Duane,

I like the idea of the bracket for the umbrella on the TD and Josephs umbrella looks really cool. For waterproofing, just spray on a can of scotchguard and that problem is solved.

I thought of something else about that bracket. If the umbrella is in a bracket on the side of your tear, half of the umbrella is not over your galley, it is hanging outboard of the trailer. What's more, as the sun moves across the sky, the shade will wander away. For this reason, I think there should be two brackets. One on each side of the galley. Then you can choose the bracket that works best for any particular time of day.

I'm thinking about galley extension tables that will mount in several different locations. Perhaps they could use the "outboard" shade.

Really, the best reason for using this type of umbrella is that it would look "retro". I'm not sure if the awkwardness of dealing with its size, weight, position and vulnerability to wind would offset the look.

Thanks for your replys. Are there any others that have tried umbrellas?

Duane, if you check out some of the gathering photos, you'll see that a lot of people bought EZ-Ups in certain colors, or added certain adornments to them and their sites, that kept them retro-looking.

Wait until you see what I got up MY sleeve.

Shucks, I am even thinking of using "golf" umbrellas for local shade, with simple stands. Wind comes up put them away.

In a wind how do the various shade shelters work? I took mine down at night.

That wind thing can be ugly. I went on a week tent run this spring and had 20 to 30 mph winds every night. Our tent was too full to blow away, but it sure took a beating.

Sorry to drag up an old post, but what about the type of umbrella used on boats? They stand up to the wind on boats because they have lines to the four corners. They are a bit expensive, but they have a good idea. It would be pretty easy to attach 4 tabs to a patio umbrella and put some lines on it. If you used the boat umbrella all you need is a longer pole.

I was at SAM's and they had those big patio umbrellas on sale as do many places because of the end of summer.

Duane,

Here is an alternative. I would think the market umbrella, while looking vintage like, would be heavier. The lighter shades with an aluminum pole may be a viable choice to mount a hitch flange on the side of the TD, or center rear. The center rear flange could be used for a bicycle rack as well. Put flanges on the both sides of the TD, and can double as a side table, or umbrella support.

Here is another vendor:

Costco.com has it, and comes in three different colors. The green camo pattern shade looks almost vintage. :-)

If you don't like the color of the umbrellas in the picture, I am sure you can find one that has a color or pattern you like. I was thinking of making the support when I get a round tuit.
