rope light

Postby Andy Ehle » Wed Sep 06, 2006 7:25 pm

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has used ropelight in a tear?

I have looked around and found led ropelight and am going to use it as indirect lighting on the inside( run around the perimiter(sp) of the roof)

Here are some pics of what I did in my moms bathroom. The only thing I didn't do was to lay the marble. I had a friend who is a pro do it.

The bathroom was not done at this stage. The pics were to show the indirect light( mom did not want to turn on any bright lights in the middle of the night)

Can you get 12 volt rope lights? What is your amperage draw for the length you are thinking of using? It could be cool for some soft indirect lighting.

This website says 12 volt rope light draws 3 amps per foot. Danny

The radiator is hooked into the house boiler and warms towels and was a serious pain in the tushy cause she didn't decide on a new radiator until the floor and cabs were installed. I had to break up part of the floor to move the radiator pipes and then relay it. :(

Gerdo,
Yes 12 volt led rope light is available and it uses 3 watts per foot
o power.

Danny
I also found another supplier that says current draw is .04 amps ft.@12volts that I like alot more for power consumption. I don't know how to do links but the site is Lighting FX.

WarPony did a test on his tear with rope lights. The pictures are in his album.

Tear fan

Thanks. I checked out the pictures.

I am going to hide the light around the cieling perimeter with some sort of wood trim. Similar to putting crown mold around a room but set down from the cieling with light hid behind it.gives a nice detail and shows off the crown.

I do plan to install other light sources this really is only for an accent.

We have thought about putting accent lights under the tear, like you see on cars. Give it a nice glow at night in the campground. You know, something to draw attention to the "cute little thing" (like it REALLY needs more attention!)

I thought of rope lights but they're incandescent bulbs and draw a lot of power for non-hookup camping.

Instead I bought some mini LED christmas lights last year. At first I planned to convert them to 12v use but ended up just plugging them into a small inverter. Each string of 60 lights draws 0.03 amps at 120 v, or about 3.6 watts total (compare this to the standard mini-christmas lights where each bulb is 3 watts). The inverter wastes almost as much power but all together with two strings of lights and the inverter waste it still draws less than 1 amp from my batteries. That's about the same as two dome lights.

Now if only they made nice sturdy rope lights with LED bulbs!
On Edit: DOH! I just searched and LED rope lights are now available. Doing a quick search I found several places selling 150' kits for anywhere from $300 to $600. I wonder if the 150' length is what they need to allow 120 volts without a transformer. If so it seems that 9' would allow use of 13.5 volts.

I have some of that stuff to experiment with sewing into the welting on upholstery. It gives a nice soft glow and in a small space like a teardrop I think it would do a better job than ropelight. I'm using the E L Wire from Streetglow http://www.streetglow.com/site/products.accessories.elwire.html

Here's an 18 light LED string that runs on 12V. 1/2 watt load.

I finally got around to taking pics of my rope lights.they give a nice glow to the tear, just enough light to keep from getting lost in the dark.
