How Much Lauan?

Postby cablerunners » Fri Oct 20, 2006 4:47 pm

Hey All,

Since my newly built trailer is the only thing I have that can haul full sheets of plywood, I want to get it all in one trip. While my trailer is still a flatbed... :)

I'm building the Generic Benroy 5 x 8.

*** How many Lauan 1/8" sheets will I need for the inside and outside ceiling and hatch? ***

I'm thinking 5, but is it 6?

Thanks,
-phil

I used almost 3 on the inside and bought 4 more for the outside. I have yet to skin the outside so I am not sure if I have enough. I used the scrap from the 3 to make the panels of the wall between the galley and the cabin. Oh, I also made the walls of my tear 5 feet tall. 6" in the floor and 6" more for headroom.

Phil, I used 3 inside and out for the ceiling alone. Plus one for the hatch. That doesn't count the sides.

For my 5 by 8 I bought 16 of Lauan and 2 Birch for the outside and had a lot of pieces left, but no full sheets.

A 5 footer produces a LOT of 36" scrap.

Phil
I used 8 sheets. 3 inside and 5 out. You should only need 7 depending on your seams. I am 10' and have undercurves also.

Enjoy

Mine is 5' wide 8' long.

I used 5 sheets on the floor. Two on the inside walls. Three on the ceiling, Three on the top plus two on the hatch. All of the bulkheads and cabinet pieces were sandwich, most with insulation, all with lauan skins.

I wasted some, but it sure was fun.

If I built a 4 footer, I'd cut that in half. My next tear will be 36" wide to use all that wood.

Wow, did I under estimate...

But I'm not surprised.

I'll get 7 sheets... I'm not sure about skinning the inside of the hatch yet.

All I need the Lauan for is the parts that I need to bend. I'm going to use 3/8" ACX for the walls (sandwiched between 1x lumber).

Thanks All,
-phil

Auntie M, I have been having a very down day... Until I read the above!

Your innocent remark sparked a wee bit of a grin on my otherwise sad face...

Thank you! :laughing1:

:o  All the editing in the world wouldn't have prevented that. Still had to read it 3 times to get it.

I guess if I was 10' I wouldn't have so many curves and could get a bunch done. ;)

Happy to be of service.
