Should I Seal the Door Trim?

Postby John6012 » Tue Oct 24, 2006 7:57 pm

I'm in the finishing stage of the doors and would like to know if I should put butyl tape underneath the 1" T moulding on the facing of the door or should I leave as is and apply a bead of sealant around the frame that the moulding creates. Thanks!

John, I am assuming you are talking about where the T sits/meets on the door...this is one of your critical points and needs to be well sealed...heck all trim needs to be well sealed...

Actually Jack, it's screwed around the edges of the door and I have poly on the edges. It's the front or outside of the door where the t moulding rests against the aluminum sheeting. Thanks for answering my question, I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear...

john, goto a hardware (or box store) and get a closed cell type weatherstipping to use for the seal...it generally has a peel off hi-bond adhesive on the back of it...the thickness will be upto you.........

John, just goto the section with all the weatherstripping...they should have a large selection from around 1/8th upto ??? in various widths and styles...pick one that is a closed cell foam that looks appropriate to you..........

John,
I put a bead of Silicone in the corner if the "T" before I mounted/screwed it on my door. I did not caulk the edge after mounted.
