Standed wiring using extention cord wire

Postby slipperyd12 » Thu Nov 02, 2006 3:48 pm

Today I was in the hardware store looking for stranded wire. There was rolls of extention cord wire 12-3, 14-3, and 16-3. This is really flexable and should take more abuse than the tear drop should give. It is all orange. Has anyone tried this? Price wise it is a little bit cheaper. The small town I am in, it is easier to find than regular stranded wire. Thanks John

we used the 12/3 for our 120vac wiring and 14/4 trailer cable(split in two) for our 12vdc...if it is cheaper and it works for you...use it...

I used extension cord for my AC power. Works fine for me, the only drawback if that it is a little large due to the jacket.

I used the orange extension cords 14-3 on my 110VAC, and is protected by a 15 Amp circuit breaker. on the 12VDC 14 Gauge flat trailer wire was used. On the Battery cables 10 Gauge stranded wire was used protected by a 40 amp breaker. Also I noticed the extension cord wiring was little big with the jacket also.

Here's another vote for "use it". No good reason you can't.

I've been doing this for years, but I splurge on all weather cord that stays flexible down to -20/40. I figure it's actually better than automotive wire because you've got two layers of insulation.

Plus I buy 50 or 100 footers. Then when I cut off the male plug end I leave 6-15' of cord attached. The male plug with that much cord is perfect for fixing the power cords on power tools like drills and saws.
Commandant Louis Joseph Lahure has a singular distinction in military history - he defeated a navy on horseback. Occupying Holland in January 1795, the French continental army learned that the mighty Dutch navy had been frozen into the ice around Texel Island. So Lahure and 128 men simply rode up to it and demanded surrender. No shots were fired.
