One of these would probably be your best bet. I plan to get one when I'm finished building.

It's a Sportz SUV tent. About $179, 2 years ago. 12' X 12' X 8' sets up real easy in 5 minutes and makes a great cold weather living room with a ceramic heater. If you want more info,E-mail me or PM.

For the last three years we have used a 10 x 10 EZ up type with mesh or solid sides depending on the temp. We set it up right next to the tear to use as a living room, dining room and changing area. Has worked well for us. Have just upgraded to a 12 x 12 and at the SE Fall Crawl I set it up over the tear with the tear centered. That gave a private area on one sideabout 4 ft wide and a public area of the same size on the other. Ihave two hooks mounted at edges of galley hinge and made up two pvc poles that I can use with a poly tarp when excesive rain impedes cooking. It doesn't take ten minutes to set up or tear down after you have done it a few times. Have used floor space for extra campers as well.

Last season I camped in several places that had really nasty night winds. I was tent camping (the tear wasn't finished yet) and I was sure the tent was going to take a ride.

I am very concerned about any tent and how the wind would act on it. It seems that the shade shelters, without a floor would be particularly vulnerable. I know that a tent can be anchored, but is that going to be enough? Half a dozen stakes doesn't seem adequate for a 30 or 40 mpg gust.

My current thought is toward a very small side shelter that is low and can be thoroughly anchored and then perhaps a larger shelter that can be taken down at night, if there is any thought of wind.

Wisdom?

Dave
Are you wanting something you build or purchase.

I built these, both withstood 20 to 30 mph gust. Attaching the tarp in high winds is something else, but once it was up it stayed up.

This one is 5' x 5' x 6' 1" PVC pipe.

The budget (and creativity) say I'll build one. I have friends in the outdoor fabric business.

Jeff: I've been looking at that Cabela tent for a long time. Makes me wonder about modifying the rain fly on my big dome tent to make it cover the tear door. Could be done on my little dome as well.

Gage and Bob, I like the way you have your anchored down, which may well be the whole secret to camping in windy conditions.

Endo: I like the way that you tent snuggles up to the tear. "I'll protect you, little buddy."

I am leaning close to Gage or Bob's designs.

Gage, I have liked your setup when I first seen it. It looks like you can have it set up in less than 5 mins. and it looks like it would hold up very good in windy condition. Did you make that or is it a store bought??? Also does it attach to a awning rail??

Try the Kelty car-port (?) for a minimalist approach.

Or move it over the gallery..

This is a medium, the large might cover the entire campground

It all fits into a small bag but you need lots of room to install the bungee-poles that must be 14 ft long. And you will need good anchors, this thing can fly away!
