power distribution panel

Postby Duane King » Thu Mar 22, 2007 5:53 pm

I read the sticky about wiring several times over. I printed out the last of the trailer wiring schematics to help me in the wiring of my own rig. There was somebody that posted a link to a power distribution panel and wanted everybody's opinion on it.

http://www.westmountainradio.com/RIGrunner.htm

As far as I can tell, nobody responded to this inquiry. I would like to know, is this product useful in a teardrop trailer. It appears to be some sort of hardware developed for radio remote control devices. Can it be used as a wiring hub for all of the 12 volt stuff in a tear?

 Waddayathink?

They could probably work as a "fused" distribution unit.... But you have to plug your devices or circuits into plug provided in face of unit.... In most case its probably is not practical for a "hardwired" system....

Yeah Duane, we missed ya. 8) I'm gonna step out on a limb here cause I read it and I don't see anything that jumps out and says "wrong". I haven't seen one like this though. Nice looking ain't it.

Many people have these for ham radio gear. Since most things in ham radio is 12v, this provides a handy "power strip" to plug your "rig" (radio) into at the back of your desk. It isn't the cheapest way to go, but when you're plugging and unplugging high amperage equipment, this is easier than using a binding post.

It seems like there are better solutions for a teardrop. A simple terminal block would probably do, since you're not really expecting to move the wiring in your electrical closet around much, then put 12v plugs where you need them.

Duane, I have looked at those before and they are nice...and they are PRICEY...goto waytekwire.com and buy a fuse block w/ground for around 10/12 bucks and your done...they also have some really nifty push button panel mount curcuit breakers...upto 40A, for 120vac for under 3 bucks....

p.s. if you are not familiar with waytekwire.com, they have some of the lowest prices and biggest selections of electrical components on the web........MJ

I haven't been able to work on my trailer for the past four months. I got involved designing and building scenery for a local theater company. It wiped out months of good trailer building time. The play is closing this weekend. After I strike the set, I get my life back.

I just started up again on my trailer a few days ago. I have never posted pictures of my galley. It is all done and it turned out real sweet. Got the gas hooked up and everything. I'll try to post something in the next few days. I just put the cabin ceiling in yesterday (all but one piece) and I am now starting to figure out wiring. This morning I placed an order for a stupidly expensive 12 volt breaker panel with led lights and backlit switches. I don't need it, but I couldn't resist it. It is marine hardware, so you know I paid way too much.

I also ordered a surface mountable battery charger. I am having second thoughts about that however. I probably should have gotten some kind of converter or inverter or whatever you call it. This charger will automatically top off my battery whenever I plug into city power. It never shuts off though, it just slows to a trickly when the battery approaches a full charge. I may have made a mistake ordering that.

I ordered the charger from Hamilton Marine. It is described on their website with the following words:

6-amp output, 1 bank, 12V system, 8-10 hours recovery time. Full-time maintenance function. Waterproof, fully-encapsulated electronics. Unit comes complete with pre-wired 6-foot AC cord and 2 4-foot DC outputs with ring terminals.

As long as I am confessing my over spendedness, here is a link to the panel I ordered. Don't tell my wife how much this thing cost us. She wants to camp in the trailer, but she won't sleep well if she finds out how much I invested in a marine electrical panel.

Duane, I googled the unit and it appears they are designed to be left in continuos use, so it should be safe to be left hooked up on a permanent basis...there was not a lotta detailed tech info so I am just assuming this from the text on the ads....as far as the panel you show and fully realizing it is your money to spend and not meaning any offense, I just gotta ask...ARE YA NUTS :D

Yeh, that's how I'm feeling about it too. The salesman spent a long time with me on the phone. They are a retail store and he was catching grief for not manning the counter to help paying customers. After answering all of my questions so well, I couldn't get myself to hang up the phone without making a purchase. Like I said, don't tell my wife.

I've decided to stay off the phone for a while. . .
