Cleaning rusty cast iron with electrolysis?

Postby mfkaplan » Sat Jun 23, 2007 2:00 pm

Has anyone used the electrolysis method to clean rusty cast iron. I have a huge pot ( no feet) that is coated with a good layer of rust. I tried vinigar and got off the thickest, crustiest rust. I still can't tell if it has any markings. It seems to be quite solid, though.I t's been in the shed for years after I brought it home from my dads and it was rusty then. It's oval and would hold a medium sized turkey or even a whole brisket. I like a challenge!

Ma3tt, it might. But since you have probably one of the most varied iron collection on the forum, how do you get extreem rust off acquired iron?

I mostly use electrolysis for removing embarassing hair like my uni-brow and cleaning up my speedo lines. However... here is a great link.

It is very fun to do. It has to be a reallllllly bad rust case before I will break out the electrolosysisis system. As I really like to burn things I tried to collect the hydrogen gas to burn it didn't work. If is a minor case I will use the spinny wheel and a drill, I found a paint removal wheel that puts a nice polish on the Cast Iron. I have a great recipe for pot roast. Take pictures,Good Luck.
