Need help making a 3" hole

Postby catrinka » Sun Jul 08, 2007 7:32 pm

I have been trying to make a 3" hole in the side of my trailer to run the electrical wire outside. Like a dummy I picked up a 2 1/2" hole bit instead of a 3". But I didn't realize it until after I had the hole cut out. I went back to the store and now have a 3" bit, but how do I get it to stay centered without the middle piece to hold the pilot bit? Are there any secrets for this?

Hello Catrina , if you can cut 4 1/2 " piece of plywood and tack it up on the inside . Than take your 2 1/2" and pre-drill only the center . Than use you 3" hole saw .Make sure the nails are in the far corners . Goodc luck Kerry

Cathy...I've taken the larger bit and drilled a hole in a piece of ply....then used some good double stick tape (like 3M VHB) to hold it in place on the outside and gently started the bit, till it cuts it's own hole. You can do it without the tape by using brads etc...but I have the tape around. Work the bit so that the outer edges do the majority of the cutting. I'd also back up the backside with something so that you don't tear it out. Tape will work if you aren't really trying to push and power it through, but you can take the template and reinstall it on the inside and cut from that side also and both will meet up with minimum of tearout. Just an idea...hope it all works out for you. Doug

I've done what you've done. Follow what others have said or . . .

Take a scrap piece of wood (1/2 to 3/4 inch thick) and use your 3" and drill through it. You'll use the scrap you just cut the hole in as a guide and you don't have to worry about the pilot bit. Screw, clamp, or have someone hold it, centered over the smaller hole you cut. This method will work with spade bits, forstner bits, or holesaws.

Sounds like I was going in the right direction. My original plug won't stay in the hole because it is made up of the outside layer of fiberglass, foam insulation and hardboard, so it just goes where it wants. I have cut another plug out of scrap plywood and was just trying to figure out how to get it to stay in place when the sky opened up. Looks like the rain has set in for the night so I will give it another try tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas.

I had a boss once that said it wasn't really a mistake unless it took more than a 1/2 hour to fix. As I got older I found that saying was actually truer than not. Simple amd that is the story I am sticking with

You know a mistake is common when someone markets a tool to recover from said misadventure.
Commandant Louis Joseph Lahure has a singular distinction in military history - he defeated a navy on horseback. Occupying Holland in January 1795, the French continental army learned that the mighty Dutch navy had been frozen into the ice around Texel Island. So Lahure and 128 men simply rode up to it and demanded surrender. No shots were fired.
