Venting the cabin

Postby mydogegore » Fri Jun 18, 2004 5:18 am

Hello all,
I am looking at different vent/fans for the cabin and saw this one...
SOLAR VENTILATOR VENT FAN POLYCRYSTALLINE
http://store.sundancesolar.com/sunsolpowven.html

and wondered if any of you guys had installed something similar. I know about the FANtastisic vent/fans but they are big and spendy. I am installing a sunroof in the place of a traditional vent so I can see the stars and am adding a vent futher down the cabin roof. If any of you have any suggestions they a very welcome.
Thanks

$69 for a tiny vent is pretty expensive. I'd look at using a computer fan for $3 and a round grill. I believe someone here on the board has done that. I think they also have something similar in the Hunter Teardrops. Can anyone verify that?

Thanks,

Mike...

P.S. That solar vent only works in direct sunlight. I don't know about you, but I tend to park under the trees when I camp, and then the vent won't work???!!!

I did it on the mini-hopper. I didn't want to cut a hole in the roof. Went to home depot. Got sofiet vents and installed a screen over the vent on the inside. Drilled the 3" hole in the side of the hopper and installed a 12volt computer fan over the hole to draw air out. I really need a window on the door side as I did this on the window side and don't get much air flow this way. With a window over the door side I should get more air flow. Total cost about 10.00, I also got this idea from Don at the Call of the Wild.

Buford,

Do you happen to have a couple photos of your setup?

Venting/Windows

Postby tba02 » Fri Jun 18, 2004 7:13 am

Buford,

I'm curious as to where you got the windows for your mini?

I'm starting a camper project (will start another thread in Non-traditional Designs for that) and windows are the current research item.

Thanks,
Grover

I got the one widow at a junk yard I passed in Gainesville Fl. Just happened to stop by that day and they had one for 10.00 So I got it.

Junk yard here in Melbourne has a bunch you have to pull out of trailers.

I ordered one of these fan-powered $58.99 units from JC Whitney. Should arrive any day now. http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=1090&catalogId=10107&langId=-1&storeId=10101

I hadn't planned on paying $69, more like $30 on ebay. I am also in Alaska so parking in the shade isn't always needed. But Thanks for all the suggestions I will play with the computer fan idea, because they are usually compact enough.

I can verify that the Hunter Shadow uses a computer fan to vent air from the cabin. It works great, but is a bit noisy when running. Here is a picture:

Air is vented to the galley. If the galley is closed, the air is vented out through 2 small vents, one on either side of the trailer.

Hey Mike,

We call that a "lulling whir". My wife and I don't seem to mind it, but if your a light sleeper who needs silence, yup you'll be a tad annoyed... better than sweating though!

Did they change the location of the 12V sockets? Ours are mounted to the bottom of the top shelf.

Lulling whir?

Seems to me it would be soothing, kinda like the white noise from rain. :thumright:

I can go to sleep with music, but it's hard for me to do it with any kind of fan going. I was born in California - what else can I say?

Hunter is constantly changing things on their tears. Last Friday I stopped by and they were installing 120vac service in one of their tears. It had a humongous old circuit breaker underneath the bed - no half measures at Hunter....

Interesting Mike... I just use a small 400W inverter for anything 120... simple solution. (see right side of photo above speaker)...

I think they should offer a galley option to make it more usable, something like our mods. Have you heard anything of that sort?

Some thermostat control of that fan would be great too!

Some prop up device would be a real plus too for the underbunk storage. They certainly would get some good feedback from use Hunter owners if they came on this site.

Good poll for Mike to add.. 'What kind of tear do you own?'.... homebuild (the various models), Hunter, Camp-Inn, Little Guy, PT Snoozer, Cozy Cruiser etc
