salvaged grates

Postby tk » Mon Sep 03, 2007 6:50 pm

Hi all, I salvaged a couple of grates from an old Weber kettle. Want to use them for campfire cooking. I'm looking for suggestions for lightweight, compact supports to raise the grates above the fire bed. In another thread someone mentioned cinder blocks. They're kinda bulky. Any other ideas?

Best,
Tom

If you know anyone that welds, get some rebar and cut three stakes (like long tent stakes). Then cut the tops off 3 links of chain so each one creates a big "U". Weld one "U" to each stake. You can pound the steaks into the ground in a triangle just big enough for the grill to drop into the saddles created by the links of chain.

It's not very elegant, but it's cheap and breaks down to a very small size.

My brother in law uses railroad spikes. don't know where you would get them but his camp cooking kit fits in a 5 gal bucket. Aluminum foil, charcoal, lighter fluid, hammer for the spikes---the only thing that doesn't fit is the grate itself. It's a pretty cool setup

Hows about 3 metal pipes about 10- 12 inches long with 90 degree elbows on top. You could also use rebar with a 90 degree bend on them. All you would have to do is drive them into the ground and put the grate on top of the 90 degree parts.

I have used this set up before but with an oven grate, it works great.

Great ideas! I too scrounged a grate off a weber but used several "old fashion" rocks to hold the grate up over the coals. Rocks are pretty much everywhere and you don't have to pack them in!

I like the railroad spike idea!

Don't laugh... That's just what the homeless winos do around here! They live in the woods behind Walmart. :o

Try using tall cans with the ends cut out. Cans like V-8 juice comes in. 3 or 4 would support a grill just fine. You could even put one in the center and build the fire around it. Plus, they are light and cool quickly when kicked away from the fire.
