Coffee Pots

Postby Lynn Coleman » Thu Oct 04, 2007 10:38 pm

Well most folks like coffee, personally I don't but hubby drinks enough for the two of us. We bring our household coffee pot with glass carafe.

What I'm wondering is what all of you do for your coffee brewing. I've thought about getting an old percolator, there's always those camp stove pots that you set on the campfire or gas stove but I'm looking for something small and very portable, since he's the only one drinking the coffee.

What are your suggestions?

Lynn
PS he hates instant coffee.

I use a coffee press that is made of lexan (plastic). If you are unfamiliar with a coffee press it is quite simple. I heat water over my stove and pour it into the press that containes the desired amount of coffee grounds, then let it steep for a about 4-5 minutes, push the screen down and pour coffee into your cup.

coffee

Postby CASHCOW » Fri Oct 05, 2007 12:04 am

I have an OLD aluminum coffee pot that my mom actually used to make coffee before the Mr. Coffee and perculator was invented... She finally put it in the camping stuff with her cast iron pans...... so when she died, I got all of those. The coffee pot is simple to use and get the coffee made in about 15 minutes on the coleman stove. If you are wanting one that operates on 112v....then you might check with some of the coffee makers for the ones with a caraffe instead of the glass pot.....

Lynn,

Get an Aeropress

Image

http://www.aerobie.com/Products/aeropress_story.htm

And Don't look back

A former Press Pot (French Press) guy, the Aeropress beats the press pot hands down for convenience, speed, cleanup, control over brewing, taste, etc. etc.

I've tried and still use from time to time (except for perk!!)
French press
Ibrik
Moka pots
Drip
Melitta cones
Percolators (worst way to brew coffee ever!)
Cowboy

Just ignore all the hype in the advertisement.
Alan Adler, the inventor, is also the inventor of the aerobie flying disk.

Check out the 28 page thread on Coffeegeek.com for more info. on the aeropress than you would EVER want. Give yourself a WEEK to read it all!!!!! Alan Adler contributes to this thread and you can ask him any questions. He's glad to respond.

No I don't sell them. Yes, I do like it.

Coffee in less than a minute. Cleanup -- 10 seconds.

I made a "Coffee Pot" like that once. It was the Navy version though.

Then we got Hi Tech and made one using one of the Ships fresh water evaporators.

That was good coffee. :?

There is only one way to make coffee when you're camping. You percolate it!!  If you do it properly it comes out perfect every time. You could bring a carafe to keep it warm, but I like to put it off to the side of the fire. :coffee:

I haven't settled in on a coffeepot to put in the trailer yet--for now, I've been using the system that I always took tent camping. It's also the system I take on the road when I'm traveling, and I keep an extra one in my desk at work...

I heat water in my small pot...
I set up the cone...
I brew directly into my mug of choice.
Although this says it's a '1 cup' size, it's actually the same size cone that came in the Gevalia freebie (back when it was a four cup pot). It uses a #2 filter cone...easily brews 32 oz.
It also comes in colors and with a matching mug if you want to get fancy...but mine are just basic coffee brown.

I must say, that Aeropress looks pretty cool, though.

+2...Makes great stuff.
It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker.

Ever tried cowboy coffee?

Boil water and grounds in a soup can! When the grounds sink, it's ready!
Just pour off the "coffee" carefully, into your cup.

Sounds rough, but I actually drank it for a week on a paddling trip. (no space in the kayak for coffee makers) Not bad!!

Since I am the only one that drinks the stuff I bought a Coleman Drip coffee maker that sits on top of your camping stove. Works real nice.

I will also make "Hungarian Coffee" - I guess the best way to describe it - as a close cousin to Cowboy Coffee. Take a large coffee pot - put in some ground coffee - a few egg shells - cold water. Place on fire and boiler her up. Real good....................

I also have a stove top expresso maker. Nice to make some strong coffee
