Buying Filon

Postby drksm » Tue Oct 09, 2007 5:50 pm

Hello All. I am new to the forum and have following the T&TTT group for some time in preparation for building my own 5x10 Benroy. I have been collecting all the necessary parts and supplies and have hit a road block getting affordable filon in my area (north central Colorado). I found a link to a gentleman in Wisconsin, Glenn Erickson, who quoted me an outstanding price and wanted a check in order to send the filon. I just wanted to know if anyone out there has heard of him or done business with him. I do not mean him any disrespect for he has been quite courteous and helpful but I thought a bit of follow-up was in order. Thanks, drksm

hello drksm, what is your first name? i don't know how to pronounce drksm?

check out this post:

http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=5899&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Gage started that thread, and from what i can tell from spending countless hours on this website, if Gage posted it, it's the truth, and something you can trust.

Will the guy take a money order, credit card? You can understand why he wouldn't wanta send product without a deposit at least?

Best of luck to you!

Boy, I've been racking my brain for the past two day on this Filon/Glenn Erickson question. Thanks TK for posting the link to that posting. I made that posting a year ago but it all comes together now. I made that posting for a friend named Larry. He built the 'outback' teardrop. And at the time was not a member of this board. And like TK said about me, I would trust what Larry said and wouldn't be afraid to deal with Glenn Erickson. He is no different than anyone else requesting money up front. It's not a job being preformed, but a product being bought. Think about it. Because of the amount of money involved, just as a safe guard. I would send at least a Money Order and send it reg. mail with sig. required.

The Outback is skined with Filon where as mine is skined with Aluminum. That's where I was confused.

I am trying to decide on Filon because of the cost.

He quoted me $1.00 per square foot for 6 ft wide sheets. He'll roll it and box it (the special heavy duty cardboard box is $25 extra but recommended). He will then ship it and the shipping is paid to the freight company on delivery, I don't know what the charge will be on that. It will ship from WI, I live in CO. So for my roll of 6'x50' it is $300 + $25 for the box + shipping. I have multiple quotes from other dealers in CA and from local RV places that are all around $4.00/sqft and all of them offer only a 4' or 8'width. My teardrop will be 5' wide and I wanted to have no seams and a little extra around all the sides to "make mistakes with".

At $1/SF I'll be calling him in the morning. And it's 6' wide! That's solves a lot of problems for me.
Thanks!

Once your Filon order arrives please post to let us know how well you like it. Filon was my first choice for skinning material. I ruled out using it because of it's cost. If it's good quality at $1/sq. ft. I'd jump at the chance to use it.

BTW, you're ordering 50 feet of length. Are you going to use it under the floor too or maybe inside the galley? It seems like you're ordering more than enough to do the sides, roof, and hatch.

Does anyone have a current phone # for this Glen Erickson? It seems that the link to a prior post has a phone # that belongs to some business that doesn't recognize his name.

Also on the prior post it says that he was charging $2 per square foot. Now he is charging $1 ??

I would love to talk to this guy, as I am very interested in purchasing if these are his prices.

Thanks drksm

It comes in 8' wide rolls, cut to length.
