I learned to drive with my folks 1959 green & white Rambler station wagon. At the time it was an embarrassment since everyone else was driving Chevy's, Fords, & Dodges but I survived. That car now would be a classic, just as Doug's is. :) Danny

I learned to drive a 50 something VW bug. My dads driveway was about a mile long up a hill. up and down up and down. what memories. I was 15 and couldnt take it on the road.
My first car was a Nash Metropolitan. It was a two seater with a little tiny bench in the back. I could get about 9 kids in it. We had a blast.
Then I got into racing and had a 1955 chevy. It was hot!

My first experience was on the farm in a cut down '39 Plymouth 6cyl. I can't remember where the shifter was but I'm guessing (3) on the floor.

We went to get the cows in and had a blast. My first real driving was on the '50 Desoto and the '57 Chevy wagon.

I remember our driver's ed car was a '57 Ford (with dual controls - thank god.)

I was 12 when dad taught me to drive his Pinto station wagon stick shift....my first car/truck was a 1976 F250 4x4 stick shift. I don't think I drove a automatic until I was 20ish.

A 1970's chevy truck, The guy I went to Santa Anita race track got drunk and he was my ride home so I jumped in and grinded and stalled the truck all the way home to Eagle Rock, Ca. I had rode mini bikes and dirk bikes since I can remember so it wasn't like I was blind to what to do.

At 13 was pumping gas on Saturdays at a Texaco. Owner of the station collected cars/trucks.

1928 American LaFrance FireTruck. The owner let me drive it in and out of the service bay every Saturday. Wooden spoke wheels and no power steering!

Also had a Dalmation, somewhere I have pictures of me and the dog on the firetruck.

Yep, it was a 1960 Rambler with the push buttons for the gears(auto) on the dash.

Next on a 57 Dodge got 3-4 miles per gallon. That one was gone in a hurry.

Then a '55 chevy belair 4 door. Paid $125 for it and it was a real keeper!! Broke the shift off the tree. Had to knock a hole in the floor pan stick a broomstick through the floor and "lash" it to the tranny lever (auto again) Also wrapped a stove pipe section around the muffler when the muffler developed a hole. Hay bailing wire . . . you know!!!
Sold it for $90.

Then in inherited the '60 Rambler from my Dad (college days) when he bought a VW Beetle.

My first real "purchased" car was a 1968 VW Bug (straight shift). I've owned nothing but straight shifts since then -- prolly never will.

Wife totaled the VW so I bought another (1970 VW). Kept it running for almost 20 years. One engine in the VW and one in the basement being rebuilt.

We have four boys, so at one time I owned 6 cars ... well, me and the boys did.

After that one it's just been downhill all the way.

14 or 15 years old my dads 58 jeep wagon in the backyard. The jeep was a stick. We put it in 4 wheel low range you could not stall it. Before that I would coast our 55 chevy wagon down the driveway every chance I would get. Ken

I learned in a little green pick-up. Toyota or Datsun. Don't remember which. It was my dad's. First car that was 'mine' was a 65 Cadillac. Talk about loading it down with people. You could always get a few more in.
After that I had a 50(?) something Mercury. The back window would roll down. We thought we were styling back in the 70's. I'm not a car person, but my dad was always buying and selling, so I would come home to "Clean out your car. Someone's coming to pick it up later." Now I have a PT Cruiser Convertible. It's mine and I don't share.

62 Ford Falcon - Loved that car!

Postby Alfred » Sat Dec 01, 2007 8:52 pm

When I was in high school (1980's), Dad let me drive his old '62 Ford Falcon, which had "3 on the tree". I loved that car. Had a manual choke you had to pull to start it. The passenger floorboard was all rusted out. If you lifted the mat, you could see the road beneath, in places. If I hit a mudpuddle just right, I could flood the passenger floorboard and soak my passenger, which was kind of fun, in high school. The seats were worn out, and I has some KMart seat covers on them. I remember the valves rapping, making a 'tick-tick-tick' sound. The old man said as long as you could hear 'em, don't worry about 'em. Wheel bearings finally went on the car, and Dad said they weren't worth replacing. Last time I saw it, it was at the salvage yard. Broke my heart. It was a great car.
