Rocky, That's funny! My first car was a '65 VW bug.

My 3rd/4th Cars - 73 VW Bug and 70 VW Bug

Postby Alfred » Sat Dec 01, 2007 10:16 pm

My 3rd/4th Cars - 73 VW Bug and 70 VW Bug - Loved these, too. Both of them got rear-ended. You could turn them on a dime. The 73 Bug was a one owner, guy at church sold it to me for $500. Had the big taillights, the funky heater system. The battery under the back seat, couldn't find it the first time I left the lights on and the battery went dead. Funniest "window washing" system I ever saw. You had to plug the line into the valve stem of the spare tire, and the air from the spare tire propelled the washer fluid onto the window. So, if you washed your windshield too often, your spare went flat. The 70 bug I bought off a used car lot for $600. I wish I had them today. I really loved the bugs!

I first learned to drive in a 1950 Buick Roadmaster with a dynaflow. Of course we could get about 7 guys in it to go criusin' and if everyone kicked in 50 cents for gas we could go all night!

Rusted out 54 Ford.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

The first car I actually drove on the road was a 1973 Pontiac with a 400 V8 and an automatic. I was 15 and had my learner's permit.

On my 16th birthday, the day I got my license, I drove to my first job in my dad's 1975 Mustang II with a 2.3L four banger and four-on-the-floor.

The 73 Pontiac later became my car, after my older sister trashed it. I restored it to good as new condition, and my dad was so impressed by the hard work and results of that work, that when I graduated HS, he bought me a new car. He didn't do that for my sister. She learned a very practical lesson about taking care of what you are given. ;)

Dad taught me in a '49 Chevy and then when I turned 16 and got my license, bought a 57' Chevy for $50. Worked at a gas station and sold gas during a " gas war " as low as .15/gal, but usually averaged around .19/gal. Our station and the one across the street would compete for business. He'd cut a penny and then we'd cut 2 pennies. You could normally fill up your tank for $2.50 to $3.00. And that was full service, check your oil, clean your windshield, check your tires....... Whatever happened to " gas wars? "

I taught myself to drive in a 50 Chevy coupe with 3 on the column and some rust holes in the floor. A friend of mine had the car in his yard for a year or so and he said if I could get it running I could have it. So I tinkered a little, and got it going. Only problem was I was only 15 and didn't have a license. I drove it around a little and kept it at my friends house. After a coupe of weeks I took it home, when my dad came home from work he beat me with a stick and gave the car to a friend of his. Now that I look back, me thinks he was a prick. I've wanted a 50 Chevy coupe ever since.

I learned to drive in my mom's 1962 Mercury Meteor, and the high school driver ed. car, a 1966 Dodge Coronet. Both were automatics. My first two cars were a '65 Corvair and a '67 Mustang - both convertibles and both automatics. I learned to drive a stick shift when I bought a 1971 Chevy Vega in 1972. The salesman had to drive it with me riding along on the test drive. I went chugging off the lot after I bought it! The dealer's staff must have had a good laugh! They probably thought I would be back for a new clutch in a week or two!

56 chevy 2 tone blue unfortunatly a 4 door. It was the proverbial little old ladies car. Bought it from her when she had to give up driving for $500.00 . I shared it with my mom . Drove it for my drivers license test. Two Transmissions later I traded it for a showroom brand new 67 mustang. The only senior in High school with a brand new car. No we wern't rich I just worked my ass off to make the payments and pay the insurance.

It wasn't ours. I wanted to learn how to drive a manual (all cool cars are manual shift) but we didn't have one because my mom can't drive one. My parents had a friend who let me drive the bug up and down their dirt road.

My brother taought me how to drive a stick in his 69 orange Camero. Nice car. My first car was a 64 fire engine red VW. My dad was a VW mechanic from the old country (Germany) and so it always ran great. It was a fun car to drive except in the winter. VW heaters were awful! Until the engine got hot, then they worked great.
I cut it three times and it's still too short!!

My dad took me out in our little 60-something VW bug once, so that is probably the first car I tried driving. Then I really learned how to drive in our 1979 pea-green VW Camper with a stick shift. I have some really fond memories of driving around in that camper. My mom still has it, and she has been fixing it up slowly. She still takes it out camping.

I learnt in a Datsun, before they became Nissan. My first "car" was my legendary Transit van. It had numerous upgrades culminating in a seriously hot quad carbed 3 litre V6 engine, 4 + 2 overdrive cogbox, high ratio back axle, at least 100, yes, 100 marker lights and a blue fur interior. Lock up yer daughters or what 8)

Subsequently moved up to heavy lorries including a Scania 141. Rated at 100 tons with a 14 litre engine throwing out more horses than the High Chapparal, (anyone remember that??), it's still the finest lorry I've had the joy to drive.
