Pet cool

Postby FireLion » Sun Jan 13, 2008 12:12 pm

I've searched the internet but only came up with a couple of places to buy a Pet cool, and the lowest price was $415.00 and free shipping. Is that the going price?
Where can I find one, hopefully with a lower price? Thanks for the help.

Pet Cool

Postby eamarquardt » Sun Jan 13, 2008 12:19 pm

I don't know where to buy a Pet Cool, but small a/c units are availabe for about a hundred bucks. With a little modification you can add ducts to make it function just like a pet cool for a whole lot less.

Hope this helps,

Chees,

Gus

No 'modification' I'm aware of will make it run off a small 1 Kw genset like a real PetCool does - That's really the ONLY reason to consider a way overpriced small air conditioner like a PetCool

Pet Cool versus Window air conditioner

Postby eamarquardt » Sun Jan 13, 2008 8:54 pm

I wasn't aware of the wattage of the Pet Cool and I agree that if you want to run it off of a generator size and efficiency are important considerations. I did some looking on the net and came up with this 5,200 BTU unit with an EER (BTU/WATTS at 95F) of 11. It should draw about 4.7 amps which a 1k generator should be able to handle. I'm not sure about the start load but generally speaking generators can handle a starting load briefly. The pet cool is rated at 2500 BTU at 380 watt or an EER of about 6.5 or about half of the Frigidaire. The Frigidaire provides twice the cooling for only 50% more electricity. On heat, the pet cool requires 5.5 amps or more than the Frigidaire does for cooling.

http://www.frigidaire.com/products/room ... A055P7.asp

Of course the Frigidaire doesn't heat like the pet cool.

So there you have it, everything in life is a compromise. You can buy a pet cool for a lot and plug it in and have cool. Or, you can spent $250 less, do a little tinkering, and have twice as much cold (but no heat). Me, if you need air conditioning, I'm probably not going to be there.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

One of the problems with window or room air conditioners is that they are so efficient at cooling that they don't run long enough to dehumidify the air in a space as small as a tear. So you end up with a cool but clammy environment. The petcool, with its lower btu rating, will actually run long enough to help dehumidify the air.

It's also a heater. Like I have said in the past. To build cheap is to buy the best at the cheapest price. You’ll be happier in the long run.

I bought the window shaker with the digital controls, then removed the control panel and temperature sensor and installed them at a hotter area than the return air. So far it seems to run longer and gets rid of the humidity. Not a muggy cool. I have not tried it on 100+ degree day yet, but I'm thinking it will work out great. Knock on wood.

My Petcool is very quiet also. Can't even hear it running. And even though I live in the desert I head up to the high country in the summer so I don't need a super cold unit, although I ran it last summer when it was over a 100 and was very pleasant inside the trailer.

Pet Cool

Postby eamarquardt » Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:31 am

This is what the forum is all about exchanging ideas.

Yer right, ac units must be properly sized to remove the humidity. Overkill is not good. The statement of Klatu's "I find it works well enough to get me from one planet to another" seems to apply in this case. The gentleman who installed the "window shaker" seemed to think that a small room ac unit worked ok. I have no experience so I can't express an enlightened opinion. No one on the forum has ever mentioned this as an issue.

The gentleman who pointed out that there is lots of heat comming off of the condensor is also right, but I suspect the pet cool uses resistance heating due to the fact that more power is consumed during heating. I can think of better ways to heat a teardrop than to use resistance heating and a generator. In additon, I don't know how well a heat pump would work in the snow. I know that a small charcoal or coal fire (in a proper stove) could drive you out of my 38 foot sloop. If I add a heater to the tear that I may actually finish this year, I will probably use some sort of a marine heater.

What is neat is that there are many ways to skin the cat and we discuss all of the options and then do exactly as we darn well please.

It's been fun.

Cheers,

Gus

Ok, I purchased a Pet Cool from HiTech. It should be here in mid Feburary. Dana from Missouri Teardrops said he would do the ductwork for me. I'll buy the beer if he does the work LOL. Thanks for the help.

Is HiTech the company that bought the Petcool business? I'm planning on a petcool for my next WW as well...
