TV Antenna?

Postby SteveH » Mon Apr 18, 2005 9:35 pm

I'm looking for a TV antenna for the small black and white TV we have in the teardrop. Don't want anything big, or fancy. Just something that will work and not be too offensive looking.

Any ideas?

Me too. I looked around for a boomerang shaped one like they used to put on limos but couldn't find anything except expensive window wires for cars. The RV type were way to big for my likes.

I've installed several small TV antennas on boats - West Marine among others carry them. They are roughly a 10" round plate atop a 5 or 6 " mount. You could probably even get a removable mount and fix a coax plug-in on the side or bottom of the tear so that you only mount the antenna when you are using it and stow it inside the cabin other times.

Steve, I just checked out West Marine's site and there are 3 models listed but they seem to be a bit larger than I remember - about 24" round. Found a 14" model on http://www.boatersworld.com that is closer to what I've used in the past. I think it's around $130 - nothing about a boat is cheap...

Hope you find what you need...

Dave,

I checked at West and too expensive. The cheapest they had was $159 and they were amplifed requiring power. I'll probably get a set of rabbit ears and make a base and a lead with a connector and just put them on the tear when camping.

I've just been using the single pull out antenna on the back of the set and it works, but very poorly inside the aluminum box which is a pretty effective RF shield.

My trailer has one of those boomerang antennas on the roof and it doesn't work all that great.

I bought a set of powered rabbit ears which work better. Not that I watch a lot of TV when camping. If anything I'll watch a DVD.

Nick,

Thanks for your input as I was wondering about the boomerang antenna. Seen yours in pictures, but have not found one available anywhere. Used to see them in the J.C.Whitney catalogs, but not anymore.

There's probably a reason for that.

Maybe a satellite dish would be the thing. I've met people who pay for an extra dish for their house and take it on the road.

I bought one of these to pickup HD signals (for the living room TV). It doesn't work all that great. It is very directional, I can pickup Belton and Waco stations easier than Austin stations. I can pick up the Austin stations but I have to aim it at them, then it falls off my entertainment center.

The antenna that has been getting good is called the Silver Sensor. It is pretty small albeit a bit finky looking.

Nick,

I'm not interested in all that. I just want to watch the news at night before I go to sleep. I only have a 4" black and white TV.

Steve - why not tape the news a couple nights before you leave on a trip and then watch the videos at night? Nice clean picture and no antenna.

Okay, Okay, so not everyone loves a smart-a$$

Steve,

When I was driving truck we used to use a CB antennae for improved TV reception. You don't need anything fancy. The cheapest 4 foot fiberglass will help a lot.

Bill_Storey,

Thanks, I'll give that a try.
