Thermostadt on A/C

Postby mikeschn » Mon Jul 11, 2005 5:43 am

Does anyone know how to add a thermostadt to one of those cheap manual air conditioners? I installed a cheapie in my TTT, but I don't want to turn it into a meat locker.

Here's the one that I have...

Any ideas?

Thanks,

MIke,

I just read a thread on the Pet-cooler. I think that it was Asianflava, maybe not. Anyway, whoever it was used a thermostat like in your home to control the power to the A/C unit and then left the controls of the A/C on what ever setting he wanted. The termostat turned the power on and off when the temp dictated it. Try a search on the Pet Cool.

I'd prefer something more like I have here in the house. Set it to 75 and forget about it!!! Has anyone done anything like that on a 5000 btu window unit?

Take off the inside filter and you'll see a copper tube stuck to the evaporator coils with plastic clamps. That is the "probe" for your thermostat. It is sampling the air coming into the evaporator, when it gets cold enough it will shut off the compressor.

It is easy to add a remote thermostat to your A/C.

Cheep thermostat, there is a teardrop shaped one at Home Depot for 39 dollars. 12VDCrelay capable of switching sufficient starting current and then just switch the plug tht the A/C is plugged intowith the relay. I have used this meathod in numerous applications over the years and still use it on my Petcool inthe Mexican Tear.

Go to an electrical store and get a small moter starter to do the job. The Petcool is small enough that I can use a reular lug in relay. Check out what the starting current is and go from there.

I can e-mail you a diagram of what I usualy do if you need it.

good luck

If you are just going to break the current to the unit, why not just use something like this...

Mike...

P.S. Are you sure that won't hurt the A/C?
