Alternative to Fantastic Vent?

Postby bennelson » Mon Aug 15, 2005 8:59 pm

Hey everyone,

I am trying to not spend TOO much money building my teardrop.

I have heard good things about Fantastic vents. The 400R model is around $160.

Does anyone know of anything else with a fan in it that works well for less money?

Here is one at JC Whitney
fan link
It's $60 less, I also like that it has a light in it, but is it any good? Anyone use one of these?

Also, what about the fan REVERSING? Is that one of those features you couldn't possibly live without, or is it not a big deal?

Thanks in advance,

-Ben

I have that vent in mine and it works great. Mine is identical except it has the remote opener. I don't burn the halo lights for any length of time since the bulbs draw about .7/amps each but most of the time just use my reading light. With the doors shut, windows open and fan running it will really pull the curtains away from the screens.

I also use the J C Weeney fan and it works acceptable. My only complaint about it would be the noise....wish the fan made less noise.

well let me put two cents worth in,,,,,If ya dont want to drop the bucks for a fantastic,, save ya money till you can ,, frame in the opening and have everything ready to connect but get the good one,, you will appreciate the extra money spent if ya use it at all,,

I have an inexpensive noisy one and it works but I sure wish I had a quiet one,, Next time I will,,

Chip, I've heard that comment made by more than just a few. I know people who've used the Fantastic 4000r in van conversions and they swear by them. I've not heard too many vent fans, but I can vouch that the Fantastic is quiet enough not to disturb a good night's sleep. I know it's expensive, but it's on my list of building materials..............even if I have to start camping without it.

(Side note: By the way, I haven't had the opportunity to try Crown and Pickle juice yet...........but plan to at the first opportunity.) :tipsy:

With enough PJ inside of you, trust me your roof vent could sound like a jet engine running at full throttle and you'll sleep right thru it all just like a baby

I think I owe it to transatlantic relations to move Chip on from this over-reliance on alcohol and pickle juice: it's time for him to graduate to the serious stuff.

Chip, if you let me have your postal address in a PM or email*, I'll send you a jar of a British savoury delicacy to take on toast - should be the ideal accompaniment to PJ.

Andrew

I think with J. C. Whitney fan looks like a good value considering it combines the fan and light. That being said, I have to put in a plug for the Fantastic Fan brand fan. We have the thermostatically controlled version in the LuxoTear and is one of the features I wouldn't do without.

When it's hot out, we usually fall asleep with the fan on the low setting pulling air out. On low, the fan is not too loud, but it does prevent us from enjoying the crickets and other night critters I enjoy listening to when falling asleep. However, in a busy campground, we have found the white noise from the fan useful in covering up the noise of our neighbors generators and radios.

I've tried both the JC Whitney fan and the Fantastic Fan. The Fantastic Fan is far better.

The JC Whitney fan was noisy, drew a lot of amps (there's 4 bulbs in there), and didn't move the air around enough.

Do it once. Do it right. Get a Fantastic Fan.
