round windows

Postby kennyrayandersen » Mon Mar 23, 2009 7:02 am

Somebody posted a link for some teardrop kits sold in the UK. They had some spankingly cool looking round windows that open. They may not be particularly cheap, but would really add to the look of the tear. I'd like to get two -- one for the door, one for the opposite side (or opposite door). Would anybody else be interested in getting one or more? I contacted the manufacturer and they might will willing to send some our way. Otherwise I may have to build them from scratch.

Kenny,

Do you have any pictures, sizes, and costs for these windows? I'm looking to build a small lightweight td and would prefer round windows as well.

Thanks, Suanne

Kenny,

Which supplier did you ring and whereabouts in the UK are they based?

So far all I can find in the USA is:-

http://www.marinewarehouse.net/hatch-port.html

I know its not much, but there will be a supplier of this type of gear in the USA, its finding the right terminology to search for.

Here you go. Here is a good selection. We call them Bull Eye Windows. A huge German based company.

The windows in the at Tadpole Trailers are made of 1/8" Lexan and weight six pounds a side at 24" in diameter. They open, have screens and don't leak. If anyone wants drawings on specs how to build them let me know and I will email a you a PDF file. Works well on 3/4" plywood doors up to 2 feet if you want... Only cost the price of a 4x4 sheet of lexan or plexi..

Dewi,
It was the first vendor that you posted for the kits in the UK:

http://www.sleeperkitcaravan.co.uk/index.html

e-mail:

[email protected]

They said they might could ship a few sets over

Also, the 3rd link you sent also had a very similar window, which made me think that they might be more readily available on your side of the pond:

http://www.podcaravans.co.uk/

The 'official' marine brass ones are cool, but expensive. I just thought since I saw two UK manufacturers using the same (or very similar) round windows maybe one could buy them directly without going through the tear manufacturer. A couple of the UK links you send seemed pretty nice and reasonable priced. I couldn't get the US link that you sent to come up and when I search Stateside, there isn't too much round, though there appears to be one supplier as posted earlier, so I'll check that out as an avenue as well. Anyway, I think that the round windows look pretty classy.

I should mention that Terry kindly sent those plans to me and if I can't find a suitable buy item, I may well build the one of which he speaks

How about clear deck plates. Mine are 10" OD and 7 5/8" ID.

A Skylight and a Galley back window:

Visibility it good and because they are designed to keep water out, they seal really well. If you deside to use them install them with the deckplate with the plate inserted in the frame.

Marine deck plates..... but not sure how large they make them, I was looking into them for use in a small carpet cleaning machine I was designing.... was looking at 8" - 10" at the time. The design was great, but funding the initial production cost of the mold for roto molding at $28000 - $30000 kind of put it on the back burner

(at least until I hit the Lottery or a rich relative comes into the picture....) 8)

might be hard to find, but I recall some vans used to use round windows on upper rear side and some times the back doors.

The link that I included in my post offers various sizes of deck plates. The 7 5/8" ID (approx 8") with a 10" OD frame were only $24.95.
