24 volt batteries

Postby Toolie » Sun Oct 16, 2005 1:00 pm

Someone offered to give me a 24-volt helicopter battery -$1500 when new, they are used 3 months then discarded. Will this work in a 12 volt system?

It could be done There are a lot of trucks and buses that use 24 volt systems that use a step down transformers to reduce 24 to 12 volt but there are a lot of disadvantages
weight
trying to find a 24 volt charger is tough
if the$1500 battery goes bad can you get another one for free
Only advantage I see would be how long your baterry would stay charged
possible yes, good ideal I don't think so
Just my opinion and I've never been accused of being the sharpest tool in shed :? :?

Hi

Step down box would cost far more than a decent 12v Battery, it is also inefficient and costs at least a 10% overhead.

A 33 Kg Battery at 12v will only carry the same power as a 33 Kg battery at 24v, it will not last longer in fact if used via a step down box it will last at least 10% less.

If we cut to the chase the answer is

NO

...gotta go with George here, I just got back from a manufacturers web page for 24v batteries and what I saw there showed me absolutely no advantages to a 24v battery and many disadvantage. So unless you could get a steady supply of them, on into the future, I have to say they are a nogo

p.s. of course, it is your choice

Just a thought on this one...IF the 24 volt battery has external straps between the cells ( a lot of industrial batterys do have external straps), you could cut the straps between the middle cells ( #6 and 7) and create two 12 volt batterys out of it. Then you could tie the two 12 volt batterys in parallel and use them. But, that is a big "IF".

These 'free' batteries sound like a 'free' puppy: expensive in the long run.

Thanks guys, I respect your opinions. I guess I'll pass on that "free puppy". I don't want to make anything too complicated to repair on the road.
