Chuck Box

Postby Lynn Coleman » Tue Nov 17, 2009 1:12 am

Hi all,

I came across a website that sells chuck boxes or grub boxes. I'm wondering if anyone has made one of these or something like it.

What do you think of them. The plans are only $10. to download a pdf, or you can spend a hefty amount and have them build it for you.

I'm thinking this might make a great Christmas gift for our son and his family who still camp in a tent and have little storage room at their house.

What do you think?

I made one and used it for years. I loved it but dh didn't appreciate it - probably cause it wasn't his idea. I kept some small rocks in there to use for leveling. Place for stove, seasonings and frying pan. I just measured what I wanted in it and built it to fit. :)

Built this one a few years back, no plans.

If you build one don't go to wide. Make sure that one person can get his/her hands on the 2 handles at once and lift it.

To wide and it becomes a 2 man operation...there not heavy, just awkward.

I have seen the blueskykitchen box in action, and the concept does compact nicely.

BlueSky Kitchen, does take the Chuck Box to a new level for compactness and transport, but they are a bit pricey if you don't build it yourself.

I picked up there basic plan book a few years back, I understand they are recommending new materials now, liked the concept, but I haul too much stuff now, that doesn't get used enough, if at all.

Len what is the thickness of the wood you used in your box?

Bob your box looks to be 3/4" ply, is that correct? And if so, how much does your box weigh?

What I found exciting about the Blue Sky box was the weight, he uses 1/4 ply and strengthens the wood with narrow strips of hardwood glued and nailed to the 1/4" sheet.

I want this rugged enough for transport with five kids but I'm also thinking it should be light enough for the kids mom to lug from the car to the campsite. Am I thinking too much?

a friend of ours has one that is 3 boxes in one. they slide into each other so it stores as one box. It is wonderful at our dutch oven meets. He made it. he got the plans and made it. they use it all the time

I really like my Chuck Box...

Postby Alfred » Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:09 pm

Hey Gang,

I really like my Chuck Box, which I bought at Sportsman's Warehouse for about $79, if I remember correctly...

It helps me keep the spices, cutlery, matches, plasticware, other odds-ends organized.

There is a another good discussion about Chuck Boxes here on the forum:

Lynn, I have the Blue Sky Kitchen, the Grubby Two. I really like it, the height is great, as is the counter top work space!

It is no problem for me to lift and to place where I wish. I applied a Spar Urethane finish on it (numerous coats). Water beads on it, it is easy to clean, and has a ton of counter top space.

Good luck whatever you decide. There are a lot of nice chuck box choices displayed here! I really needed all the positives listed above PLUS something I can handle by myself.
