Smudged Aluminum

Postby DewDrop » Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:53 pm

OK, I'm new to this forum but have lurked around here for a couple of years getting inspiration for my own project and it is almost finished. A problem I have is with smudges on my new aluminum skin. The aluminum seemed to have a thin film of manufacturing oil on it an I got sweaty while bending and fitting it and now I don't know how to get rid of the sweat smudges. I tried detergent but to no avail. Anybody got any ideas?

Welcome to the forum DewDrop. One of the most useful things you can do is search sdtrippers (Steve's) index. He did a helluva job with it. Click here: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=12276 and scroll down the "A's" for Aluminum. You'll see several links for cleaning.

Again, welcome. And post some pics after you buff that baby up!

I would also suggest this thread on spotting...http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=24086&highlight=sharkhide...Some members are using Sharkhide aluminum protectant to keep their trailers looking nice. Results look promising as near as I can tell..

Stainless steel Magic will most likely remove your smudges followed up with Sprayway window cleaner.
Use a micro fiber cloth to avoid scratching the aluminum. :D Danny

We use WD40 to clean stainless steel, and to remove greese from our hands. It is very mild and works great. WD40 also cleans the black tar (waterproofing) off your hands. If you have a can around the house, try a small spot and see how that works before you spend alot of money. ;)
I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing...

Mineral Oil is the key ingredient in Stainless Steel Magic.
I've tried mixing Mineral Oil with water in a spray bottle and it wasn't as smooth to apply and remove as the SSM.
Wish I knew what they add to MO as it's a lot cheaper to use. :D Danny

...they probably add a surfactant which is an emulsifier that makes water 1000 times wetter...it is used by farmers to add to the sprays they use so it sticks to plants better...it is available from farm supply stores...probably in 5-55gal barrels................

Oh, that makes sense  maybe Amway product LOC (Liquid Organic Compound) might work.
A long, long, long time ago they taught me about surfactants in their products. LOC is/was a great product. Still might be cheaper just to buy SS Magic. :D Danny

MJ, small world.
Though I never met him, Spanky McFarland was my direct sponsor.
I guess his childhood fame wasn't that lucrative.:D Danny
