Another Air Conditioner Idea

Postby vantexan » Wed Mar 22, 2006 2:09 am

I somehow got on Overton's mailing list. They are the all-things-boating outfit. Looking thru their catalog and found a portable air conditioner. Interesting thing about this one is it's designed to sit on top of a 12" X 12" or larger roof hatch. You place it over hatch as needed, totally portable, store it in the garage when not needed. Weighs 68 lbs. The product number is 35258. Not cheap however. $819.99!!

Wade,
If you watch E-bay, you can pick up one of the CRUISAIR CARRY-ON 5000 BOAT AIR CONDITIONER's for about $300. I've seen them sell for a little less, but usually more. Lots of them get listed I sold one there and got lucky, there wern't any others that listed during my auction. I was happy with the A/C but sold the boat and didn't need it.

Thanks Steve, hadn't thought of eBay. And it was a Cruisair in the Overton's catalog. I wasn't about to spend $800+ but at $300 that's a pretty good deal!

This topic got me thinking about casement and portable units. I did some searching and found they are incredibly heavy (65-85#) and incredibly expensive (I'm comparing to an $80.00 unit from a big box)....

So, I'm back to carrying a 5k btu unit in a galley space and laying it under the tear when I arrive. A couple of flex tubing connections and it's done.. remote control..... I don't like adding another task to my arrival/departure list, but it does seem like the best way to go. Hard mounting it in the galley floor takes up a lot of space...

If you need to cool a small area, like a bedroom, owners say the 8,000-Btu Edgestar Koldfront PAC8000S will get the job done. It also is one of the least expensive portable air conditioners available, something that is praised in reviews almost as often as the unit's effectiveness. As with most air conditioners (portable and otherwise), some owners complain about noise. Still, most of the nearly 100 owner comments we find for this model are positive overall. The model includes a dehumidifier feature, digital thermostat and remote control.

Easy Idea

I have an easiest idea to cool your travel trailer. Spread some green grass and close windows with bottle green color curtains, you can feel cooling like chill cooling in full trailer.

This may have been posted before but here is another idea taken from the aviation community. I would never buy one, rather I would build it as it seems to be pretty straight forward and the 3D diagram in this video basically shows the parts and placement. I have seen this on display at various shows and I have felt the output. It is more than enough cooling power for a Tear or TTT. Cheers.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPEpTABfFEE[/img] Image
