TD Mattress

Postby Bandit » Tue Dec 13, 2005 10:54 pm

I know there are many options for a mattress for the TD, but while at WalMart this evening I came across a Memory Foam mattress in both Twin and Queen size. If is so compressed that it is in a that measures approx. 2' X 2' X 6'. The Queen sells for approx. $169.00. This could be a very nice mattress for a 5' wide TD.
What are your thoughts?

What is the open, expanded thickness of the mattress?....that's what you need to consider....how much support....Doug

On the advice of others on this forum, I bought that mattress, I like a lot. I took a nap in the teardrop for the first time this week and it was really comfortable.

I actually bought mine at Wal-Mart.com which was a mistake. I didn't know that they sold them in the store until I saw them at another store, mine doesn't have them. Going thru the internet, I paid for shipping AND tax.

I bought one of those when I was considering nixing the dinette. I figured what the hay... I can use it on my bed at home if I decide to go ahead with the dinette, which is what I did. I love it!!!
BTW- You will never get it back in that package, it's vacuum packed.
It took a day or so for mine to fully expand.

The expanded thickness is 6". I've read that the preferred thickness is 4". You do seem to sink a little more in this mattress than you do a commercial mattress. A lot of people are concerned that you loose 2" of head room. I'm 5'11" (175) and my wife is shorter and considerably lighter than I, so the loss of room may not be that bad.
Those of you that have tried 6" mattresses, what are your opinions?
THanks!

You can look here, too. Depending on the thickness at WalMart.

That ought to be plenty....I got the Knox foam level B hardness 4" thick...and slipped a old piece of eggcrate foam out of the tent trailer under it....works for me....I didn't even know about the WalMart stuff at the time....I judge by how bad my lower back gets jacked out of shape at night as to whether I've got enough, and I wouldn't worry about losing height in the tear...when you're sitting in it, it gets compressed anyway...you probably won't even notice the height difference....old age is a bit**.....doug

I did something simular to what Doug did...got a 4" foam mattress from Knox Foam, but did not like it...it was too hard. So, then I got a 1 1/2" memory foam topper from Overtock.com and the two together are GREAT. Then, my mattress combination is 5 1/2", I'm 6', 230 pounds, and the thickness is a non issue.

If my memory serves me correctly, it was a grade B...know it was not the really good stuff, and it came in only one "hardness"..believe medium.

Foam mattress

Postby dtrdwngfn » Tue Dec 13, 2005 11:50 pm

I purchased a full size mattress from Mr Foam on E-bay it is 3 inches thick. Last I checked he has all sizes available. I paid $85 and that included shipping.

One more note, we sleep on a memory foam topper on our bed here at home and would not have it any other way.

A sidebar to the discussion....the Knox foam ones come with a 3 sided zipper cover for them that is water resistant...really helpful if you have a door that might have a leak and you're pulling it in a downpour....I can't remember if that was extra or not....I'd have to check receipts...but if the Memory foam works for you great!!! doug

When I ordered mine from Knox, the cover was extra. I believe they had two or three choices of material for covers.
