Ross, to be completely legal it has to have 12 square inches of lighted area and NO blue dots are legal anywhere...

Hey MadJack,
12 sq. inches  you serious :o I have seen car tail lights smaller then that. I kinda knew that the BLUE DOT was an issue  I was also thinkin' 'bout using a total of 4 lights on the rear

Thanks,
Ross

Ross, I know the 12square inches issa fact...I was trying to find a link to post and can't right now but it is a federal DOT reg...2"x6"...3"x4"...4"round to be DOT legal...I do not have any idea about multiple lights being cumlative...

12 sq inches is not much....... the only exemption to tail light size that I am aware of (Utah) is antique vehicles that had small or single tailights as OEM. I am not sure about other states. The best to do is check with your local DMV.

Lots of things are illegal, like speeding.. At motorcycle rallies, I see lots of blue dots on Harleys.... so, if I liked them, I'd put them on.... assuming I could get all red lens or remove the dots if I had to....

Ross-

I'm with Arne on this one, "it's easier to be forgiven than ask permission"!

Thanks for all of your information and your input. I DO like the blue dots, but will change out the blubs for the LEDs like Dan did on his Trailerboat.

Ok all this talk got me looking into LED replacement bulbs!

Check out these guys, lots of different applications and GREAT prices!

http://www.superbrightleds.com/led_prods.htm

It seems LED pricing is coming DOWN! (like all electronical type stuff).

I'll add this to the links, sources of supply.

Cheers,

Ross,

Yes, the blue dots are not legal, however I know a lot of streetrods that have them, they, like red vehicles, streetrods, teardrops, attract attenion. If you are doing something like speeding, reckless driving etc and the cop stops you for that well, he might write one for the lights too!

If I wanted them they would be on there! The Merc when it had stock tail lights had them, and it was driven all over the South, North and Mid west, and it still has them in the headlights.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I gotta tail light question

Postby rooster » Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:07 pm

Hey guys, What about those neat 39 Ford fenders that Grant Whipp sells. If my memory serves me right they have a blue dot in them. Just a question with my 2 cents worth.

Jim, :o

I think the thing with Blue dots...is don't be doing any thing stupid and the cops won't give you any heat...I dragged my tear 6K miles this last summer with them...and had no problem..Cal. trooper followed me close for 5 miles..passed and gave me a wave....I think that most of the officers will let you go unless you have given them reason not to....yes...they are not legal...either is running without a front plate on a car in many states....but you see it all the time....Legal...no....serious infraction, I dunno...just use your head and don't push it...If caught, plead innocence..and offer a tour of your trailer...salesmenship...can get you out of many a situation....doug
