Another tail light question...Where can/should they go?

Postby sunny16 » Wed Jan 25, 2006 11:06 am

When I built my trailer I mounted the tail lights to the rear of the fenders. I was copying a small utility trailer I have and that's where they wer mounted. Looking at picture her many are mounted in the rear hatch door. Some are part of the fenders, old style. Does it really matter as long as they are towards the rear? I have front amber lights mounted on the frame which I know are required. What's the rest of you think? And does a teardrop need any other "running lights" mounted anywhere?
I cut it three times and it's still too short!!

sunny...to be legal you must have front(amber) and rear(red) running lights at least 15" off of the ground and as far front and rear as is practical...tail/stop/blinker combination lights must be at least 15" off the ground and have a total 12sq inches of lighted surface (4"dia, 2x6, 3x4) your tail light does not count as a rear "marker" light inless it has been designed to do so and can be seen plainly from the side...here is a link that shows placement requirements... http://www.redneck-trailer.com/2004/J/PagesJ-2-J-4.pdf

Thanks guys,

I've read all that and understand but the question I gues is how far back is "as far back as practicle"? Mine are on the rear of the fenders, about 24" from the rear of the trailer. Will that qualify? I really don't want to run wires into the rear hatch for tail lights. They are of the correct size and high enough so that is not a problem.

I guess it all depends on if it is readily viewable from the side and the cop that stops you ;) ....remember is quite often better to ask for forgiveness than for ask permission...

I think that as along as they are both visible from the rear it shouldn't be a problem.

Wire that hatch! There's nothing like making life harder on yourself!

Boy I hope nothing goes wrong with my wires because there's no way back in there now. I wish I'd thought about that before I skinned the inside of the hatch.
