A cheap EZ build Solar Oven "The Solar Funnel Cooker&qu

Postby bobhilo » Fri Jan 27, 2006 12:28 am

Aloha,
I found a great site to build a simple, cheap solar cooker that would be ideal for a teardrop trip....or during the next hurricane ...it can also pasteurize(purify) drinking water or boil it
I will definitely make one before the meat spoils during the next hurricane

The Solar Funnel Cooker
http://solarcooking.org/funnel.htm

and at night the same funnel can cool...it can freeze water when temps are 50 degrees or so....interesting site

We have a neighbor is a bit out of the ordinary. ONe thing she does is she sets out a wheelbarrow with a solar cooker in it quite often during the summer. I have no idea what she is cooking but it is such as you describe. It is a box with 4 angled panels attached to the top and she faces it towards the sun. Whatever it is, I guess it is her supper and at night she rolls the wheelbarrow back into the garage.

I would assume, but do not know for sure, that the inside temp can not get higher than 200 degrees, which might make for a good slow cooker/crockpot type thing..

You're probably right, but a piece of carboard box and alum foil is cheaper.

I have a magazine at home that tells you how to make a solar ICEMAKER. (Does "Off The Grid" magazine sound familiar to anyone?)

It's not that complicated at all--uses some kind of gas in copper pipes, I think--and if memory serves me, it makes like one 5-pound, 10-pound block of ice a day.

If I can find it, I'll scan the article.

Guy, I don't THINK it was anywhere that size. I really can't remember, because I've had that mag since like 1993 and I think it's still buried under a bunch of old Hustlers in my closet.

(Since DVDs came out, I haven't looked at those old Hustlers once.)

I may be totally wrong...getting old is a b****...but what I remember seemed almost portable.

But you know what? Now that I look at the date of your file, maybe it IS the same article.

Sometime in the early 80s, a new magazine called New Shelter was published. It was along the line of Mother Earth News, and was dedicated to things involving energy saving, conservation, natural living, etc. It was a terrific magazine. After the first year or two, they changed the format, to what I'd call more commercial, and got away from the original intent to help people promote conservaton and the ecology. I still have my issues from before the change in content saved in a box. After the change, I dropped it.

Aloha
Surveytech, here is one out of a window shade that you refered to.

http://solarcooking.org/windshield-cooker.htm

these seem to be used a lot in poor sunny countries with costly fuels or long walks to get fuel

the Utah professor cooked his lunches for weeks with his....takes 90 minutes in the 11am to 2pm period....someone at the "SLABS" on the vandwellers yahoo site said he will try to use both....should be interesting...but it is cheap to use boondocking....and will draw attention to your teardrops when camped....fun to learn ;)

Cracker and Survey,

for us Floridians these solar cookers may be a useful tool with all the hurricanes we have had ...I was in the eyewall of Frances, Jeanne and Wilma 14 days with no power and hundreds of bucks of food spoiled(I did make jugs of ice but they lasted 3 days tops)

plus....you can boil water to purify it....a lot of people in my area went without clean water(water mains broke) and no power to boil water....

FEMA should put it on their hurricane preparedness website

My son and I made one for his scout troop 2 years ago. Alternitive ways to cook. We made a nice beef stew! Good Times! :D
Looking at the solar ice maker that Guy had up.....if I lined the inside galley hatch with aluminum, it would make a huge cooking surface at the back end of the trailer! Got the right shape!
