SUV tent

Postby Rickxr2 » Sun Feb 05, 2006 1:33 pm

I'm looking at a suv tent to connect to the side of my teardrop. I've seen one over the galley area before, but I'd like to step out of the trailer right into the tent. Does anyone use this setup and are there any bad points to it?

Thanks,
Rick

Rick,

We have one, but have only used it once. Have no problems with it (other than fitting it to the side of the trailer) and it does give another living space area for changing, sleeping, or just setting. You do need to find a wider level space to camp so the tent floor is level.

This is what we own and are going to use for the extra room when required.

The prices quoted are Australian dollars. I have sent them an e-mail to see if they have an agent over there.

Paul,

Those are nice, but WOW are they expensive. Ours is 8' X 8' (2.4M square) and believe we paid $129 from http://www.sportsmansguide.com/

Steve,

I misplaced the URL for that tent. Do you have it handy?

Steve, Expensive they may be but the big advantage with these is that the tent has an internal frame and only takes 30 seconds to erect. It takes about 3 minutes to remove from vehicle, set up tent and set up the awning. Add another 3 minutes to add the sidewalls and hey presto you have a change room and a storage/extra sleeping area all in under 10 minutes without breaking into a sweat.

Mike,

I was wrong, it was $159, or that's what it is now: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=189209

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It's helpful to know what others are doing. The setup in Steve's photo looks like the best solution for me. The tent is mainly for our dog. I either build a bigger teardrop, or buy a tent! Maybe I'll do both!

Thanks again,
Rick

Try this from Kelty
Image.
This is the medium version, I think it is called the Kelty Carport. I attach it to the opposite side with bungies. It does not have full side protection but when your door swings open you are basically covered long enough to pull on your pants or whatever. There are a couple more shots of it in my album. It is sort of pain to put together because the poles are very long but once up it works fine. It costs more than Boodro's home made but it should be less than a tent. Mine was a gift so price was not an issue for me.

This is the way I planon going. I did alot of work with this stuff during landscaping years. I also made "photography stuff" out of PVC (reflector holders, light stands, etc). After making one or two things I came across this guys instructions for Tinker Tubes. THis may photography related stuff, but can give you ideas. Especially how to make "clamps" (to hold things on to the PVC) that would work well holding tarps, too.
I am looking into finding this book also.

Not to mention, bagpipes, digeridoo's, snowshoes, telescopes, submarines, etc. FUN STUFF
