Do I need SIDE LIGHTS? CALIFORNIA

Postby kartvines » Sun Feb 05, 2006 3:02 pm

I have read a lot on this board about the legal requirement that is needed to register and be legal in the state of California.

There has been a lot of talk about side lights.

My manufactured 65 Scad-A-bout did not have them and I was not going to add any.

I have installed all of the wires I thought I needed, and before I skin my tear I wanted to be sure that I do not need these light to be legal in California. I read that home made trailers need them but being mine was not home made but restored, do I need them?

If Cali is the same as other states (doubtful, but ya never know) it should only need whatever it had for original equipment.
No need to mention that it was restored.

It's a lot easier to put them in now and not use them, than to put them in later if "powers that be---NOT" declare you need them. Just a thought... :)

Mike, California light law only applies if your building new. You are restoring so that which are on the teardrop new from the factory are legal. But I would put at least a pair of marker lights on the sides towards the rear (no harm). You know it's like the seat belt law. If the car didn't come from the factory with them, you don't have to have them and you won't get a ticket if you don't have them.

Have a good day.

Maybe because of being a retired trucker I wouldn't be without my clearance lights. Too many dummys in CA trying to change lanes and I want to be seen from the side.

No disrespect intended, but California can be a strange state sometime.
So Gage. Red in the rear and amber in front correct?

I thought with the tail lights would do what is needed, I am going with a larger type lights.

If your going to install two on each side, your color combination is correct. I've only got red ones on the rear sides up high.

Have a good day.
