My wife and daughter get a pretty good chuckle when they see me wearing my diving mask when I cut onions up for some camping chili. It's worth the hee hawin' I have to take.......no more tears. :R

We laugh at my Dad when he opens a can of peanuts with leather gloves on because he is afraid he'll slice his fingers off with the lid. :lol:

A little tip for cutting onions without teardrops.

It's worth the hee hawin' I have to take.......no more tears.


Put your onion in the freezer. You don't have to freeze it solid just get it good and cold.

I noticed that onions don't make me cry nearly as much if I am wearing contact lenses.

I think they work as an eye prophylactic!
still no idea what i'm doing...

When I was in culinary school a young woman asked just this question about avoiding tears while chopping onions, theChef's answer...chop faster! :)

Cutting an Onion can be an easy tearless event.


First: A sharp knife is a must so as not to bludgeon the onion there by releasing more vapors.

Second: If you cut off the top of the onion to peel and then cut in half with the root end still in tact will have a tendency not to let the juices flow out so easy. See the Third and Forth below for exact cutting techniques.

Third: Use this technique to cut your onion with ease.
