New license

Postby rooster » Fri Mar 31, 2006 4:13 am

Finally did it. Went to the Alaska DMV to get my tear a license plate today and that was an experience. I told the lady I wanted to get a license plate for my teardrop trailer and she just gave me a blank look and didn't have a clue what I was talking about. :? She look thru her computer for the logest time and never found the word, "Teardrop". I had to explain to her what it was and what it looked like. Since there were people waiting she took my paper work and money, ($65.00) gave me the plate and I was out the door. ET 45 minutes. I have me a title and registration.

Jim,

That's what I did too.

On a related note...A few years back when I went to register a VW Golf at the BMV, I went to the desk and told the lady what I needed. It took me the longest time to convince her that I was NOT trying to register a Golf "Cart".

Needles to say, she wasn't very sharp.

Tom, while standing there the thought did cross my mind.
In two years I'll find out what taxes I'll have to pay. :x

I just went yesterday to the Illinois DMV to ask what I had to do to register my teardrop trailer I am starting. I thought they would give me some requirements I would have to follow. He said how big is it. Under 2000LB's I said. Give us $65.00 and we will give you a serial number and plates. I asked if It had to be inspected when it was finished and he said no. Thats to easy.

Woodbutcher,

It is very easy in Illinois.

I've done several the same way.

Homebuilt RV. under 3000#.

They provide serial number, title, and license plates.

So easy!

Just don't bring them a utility trailer title and tell them you need plates for your teardrop (RV).
(Like the one for that old trailer frame you used to build your new tear on)

If you do, then they have to inspect it, and the real fun begins...

Anything considered under 2K#s in KS only needs lights working after dusk and rear deflectors. During the day, non-working lights are fine.
I've got a 4x6 utility tilt trailer and I don't even carry anything for it, though my lights work.
