Re: Cross Bow

Postby Ron Dickey » Sat Jan 26, 2013 11:37 pm

my wife says I am not finished with the one I have but the frame it rides on is an old boat trailer which is about to get a 3rd expensive repair. And the cost might be better spent on a new rig.

Designing a trailer leads one is all directions.
I was looking at boat building today realizing that many bowed parts are several thin planks bent and then glued together.
Other wise one would take a wide plank or plywood and cut it to the same one needed.
The curves I have done to this point cutting plywood sides for the trailer attaching wood bars between each side then using 1/8th thick ply sheets glued to the bars in the shape of the angle. Meaning the front and top of a teardrop trailer. which is the way I intend to do the Cross bow only the 1/8th sheet will go left and right.

Then there are things I do not know how to do and want to figure out.
I have always loved the trolly top much like Doug has does on two of his teardrop trailers. What I would like to do is more like the old 1960 VW van top, in some those the little windows opened too it think?
Image
where the windows on top are between the side and the center of the top is a little higher and flat so I can install a hatch or fan.

The part that concerns me is front top where the top little window area meets the front top??? :?

I have seen great idea for new cars and when they come out they do not look anything like what was drawn, I can dream but it will take some time to work out what i can and can not do.

I came up with the VW idea because in my trailer it is very dark inside and I must use lights a lot. my only windows in the boxkite are the door windows I have no top fan or opening.

I like the idea of having upper windows so light comes down and we can watch birds and clouds or trees and its inhabitancy.

I have started doing some drawings which I will photograph and post as soon as it looks better. I have not drafting table and no graphics software in my mac. so it will take a while.

funny I was drawing one and the galley became a bed like the bed of a truck with a sleeping quarters at the front. a little like a horse trailer with a sleeper.
That would mean it could be used for hauling and sleeping. And camping wise it could have a tent over the back and become an outdoor dinning room or a topless campmaster

I am thinking of storage outside the trailer. If you look at the boxkite you will see board above the wheel the area right and left of the tire could become storage area and centralize weight. Give a hight mount for brake lights and still giver us a place to put shoes and such as we climb into the trailer.

I also want an air vent on the roof I left a place for one on the boxkite but never cut it out.

This trailer like the Boxkite is not made from plans it is my ideas and ideas I have seen on other trailers.
my dream trailers are Kamp Master, the camping ideas used on and inside VW camper vans, Fold n Roll, and many Australian out back camping trailers.

here are some sketches these are just ideas, I do not know if I can do the slanted roof I am think about how I would do the ribbing for the trailer and how I would cut the wood. Plywood will form to what ever it will be asked to do.

To farther explain my drawings.

102026
click on the picture and it is ezy to see.

top right looks like a boat it shows the angled windows That I am sure will change as I find if I can or can not do it. the fender skirts have a plat form on top to put things like shoes on top.

the pictures to the left are end shots back and font. the hatch may change I am thinking of a flat piece with no lip in the back. and the straight part back rear swing down as a tailgate to hold things pulled out.

The side views with the hatch closed and open I am thinking of 4 windows not 3 and a window on the door like the box kite has. If you click on the blue trailer below (Box Kite) you will see the fenders better. There will be a small deck below the doors to rest our feet on as we exit the trailer. on the sides of the open galley I am thinking of using wood or clothe to work as a wind block for the galley.

http://www.fantasticvent.com/ will one day be on it's roof I may have a simple hand made hatch for starts.

The fender skirts will be come storage units holding things that would have been in the bonnet on the box kite. Also the battery will be behind the wheel. I am working on the support that will hold that up. The front part before the door will be storage that can be got at from inside the trailer next to the be.

Rop lights will run under each of the overhead windows inside. And a small shelf will be above the head of the bed to support reading lights.

hope this all made sense.

Ron, check out this site ... http://www.mundosilverland.com.ar...... is in Argentina, trailer looks quite a bit like the old Airstream Basecamp....albeit more refined. The website is entirely written in spanish. From what I have read they use the the most modern techniques such as CNC milling, Tig welding for the aluminium /alloy welding processes, modern composites for interior and exterior applications. There are two specific models . One is a Sport ( rear entrance) unit the other Confort..has a more conventional side door entrance. The interior is plush as can be seen in the picture of the ceiling. No info on pricing. Richard..aka Txbum

Try this link. Tad over Products ( Rroductos ) it will pull a drop down menu will line their models. There is
a slide show for each model showing the insides, and a layout drawing.

( The Flash slide show on the main page might stop you from getting to Products until it finishes loading ).

I love how flush the window are on these, and the biggest model is even open in back as a toy hauler.

Ron Dickey, Junkboy999 Terry, glad you found the links. Like Terry said the larger models have a rear entrance. I just wonder if Airstream sold the rights to manufacture to Silverland or perhaps Silverland is part of Airstream international ?

I can not find a connection but I did find these to statements.
"Airstream, still based in Jackson Center, is owned by Thor, Inc. The company presently manufactures approximately 1,000 trailers and motorhomes per year. Currently, Airstream produces several models—Sport, Flying Cloud, International and Classic Limited. 2012 trailer sizes range between 16 ft to 31 ft (4.9 to 9.4 m). Airstream also manufactures models for the European market."

In 2005, it teamed up with Nissan Design America to create the Basecamp, which resembled Boba Fett’s helmet in “Star Wars.” Bob Wheeler, the president of Airstream, said the Basecamp was discontinued when it failed to attract buyers.

AND 1935 air stream had a similar design
