11# Propane questions

Postby kayakrguy » Fri Apr 13, 2007 4:11 pm

Hi folks,

We are considering using the small !! lb propane tanks on the Snuggle Inn. We use the 1# disposables now. We have questions and I would be grateful if those of you who do use the 11#ers could share your knowledge/experience.

1) where do you get 11# tanks?
2) where do you get them filled?
3) where do you get adapters (/) that would allow you to use these tanks on a propane camping stove.

The last ? arises because the connector between my grill and our 20 # tank on the patio sure wouldn't work on our camp stove!!!

Thanks, and I hope all is well for you and yours,

Jim

Jim,

You can get extension hose for your stove from camping/sporting goods store. I would check RV Stores for the adapter and tank, your local sporting goods store may carry it also. I think I saw the small tank at my local Lowe's and Home Despot store.

These tanks can be filled at any place that fill the 20# tanks.

I bought a tree that connect to my 20# tank and the hoses that connect the tree to my stove and lantern.

Jim...I am looking toget one as well...source for hoses and adapters...
http://www.centurycamping.com/accessories/
I have seen the tanks at places like REI...they sell in the 50 to 70 dollar range...I have not checked with my local bulk propane distributor for availablility...you would also get them filled at those same places...a couple of reminders...if you hook a hose between one and an appliance, thru the control valve that the 1# tanks hook to, you don't need an additional regulator...if you are hooking directly to an appliance that does not have the 1# vlave/hookup, you will have to have an additional regulator...there are 2 types...one with a red top and one with a blue top...the blue top is the one you want for most appliances...it is a low pressure regulator...the red topped one is for hi-pressure such as fish and turkey fryers and are quite often adjustable...never hook a tank upto an appliance without some sort of regulator in place...

Some hardware and camping suppliers and propane suppliers (where local office is) have the new empty tanks.....

Adapter hoses are available at same sources as tanks.... Sears, Wally World, many sporting goods stores....

Tanks can be filled at any truck stop (that has propane) , propane sales office (bulk operation) , gas station....

One just has to look around a bit.........

I just looked at some of those not three hours ago! $39.95 at Sportsman's Warehouse here in Anchorage. Oddly enough, the 14 pounders were $29.95

I just picked one of these up (mine is 4.5lbs) at BassPro for $39.95. My local UHaul says they will fill it for about 4-5$. I am waiting to find the appropriate connection to my coleman stove before I fill it.

I picked up a 5# tank at the local welding shop for $50 filled-perfect size & cheap to refill, about $4.50. For what it's worth...

Any propane gas supply company will fill the bottles. Up here some of the hardware stores will fill them. Also many of the mom and pop campgrounds have filling stations. Don’t use the exchange at the filling stations, as people with leaky tanks will exchange them because the repair cost is high. If you got a new tank you don’t want to exchange any way.

For what its worth, this site gives tank sizes by volumetric capacity and measurement and weight capacities...

http://www.worthingtoncylinders.com/steel.html
http://www.worthingtoncylinders.com/steelspec.html

Here is another source for hoses and adapters...

http://www.mrheater.com/products.asp?catid=58

This site has a lot of good safety information and physical information about propane.

http://www.flameengineering.com/Propane_Info.html

And FYI....

The name of the connector (hose end) that goes on #1 cylinder is a "male disposable connector (1inch x 20 threads per inch)" and that connects to a "female disposable connector (1inch x 20 threads per inch)", this end adapte to you currecnt hose on appliance. The connector on then end of a hose or regulator that connects to the tanks (#4.5 and up) is a "POL connector "( sometimes called "put on left")...

But that is usually only good for #20 cylinders...
