Autoclave Question

Postby Wolf » Fri Aug 29, 2008 9:58 pm

A neighbor of mine has had this sitting outside for some time (years), it was used by a dentist. I was wondering if anyone on the forum might have any information on this unit. It was made by American Sterilizer Company out of Erie, Pa. Do not know the year.

Thanks, Wolf

I don't have any information on it, but it sure has a Jules Verne look to it. Look's like it should be in a mad scientist's lab.

That's funny my wife calls me "the midnight oil-burning mad scientist" and I'm building a trailer with a lot of 20,000 leagues under the sea Nautilus touches.

I ran the patent numbers and it looks to be about 75+ years old.

That is so cool! My autoclave is an older model, but not that old! And they sure took up a lot of room back then. I wonder if it still works?

I was told that when it was "parked" some ten or so years ago that it was still working. The inside dims are 12" by 18" Love to have it up and running before my garden overwhelms me this fall. might be nice for vacuum forming too.

Autoclave

Please be careful if you are going to fire it up for real because it carries pressure. Not to be an alarmist but it should have a good static test before you do anything. Only because I've seen the results of what pressure can do to an old tank.

That's a pressure cooker, not a vacuum cleaner!!!

In the true sense of its use that killed the bugs with heat, and pressure is one way to increase the heat.

Good advice Hoss. I could have it tested up the street at the gas company once I get everything cleaned and freed up. Most of the valves still work. I can not find another one like it anywhere on the Internet. Great piece of art

I used to tell my Dad that Tucumcarri was a place that time forgot cause you can still find really nice old things still being used there and sold there.

Did you get to see Paul McCartney when he came through?

Tucumcari is a modern day ghost town! Sir Paul was three blocks away from us, the local paper reported he was here two days later (photos from surveillance camera as he paid for his meal) I don't think most people knew who he was!
At least we don't have any hurricanes to worry about, and you can buy a house for less then the cost of a new car!

This looks like about a 2 cu ft steam sterilizer, possibly from the 60s. American Sterilizer Company (AMSCO) was absorbed by the Steris corporation some time ago. The top vessel is the steam (sterilization) chamber, and the black apparatus on the bottom is the steam generator. Steam sterilizers work through a combination of heat and pressure. The steam reaches over 300 degrees F. If the sterilizer has been sitting around for a long time, I would be willing to bet the gasket around the door is no longer functional. Please do not attempt to run this autoclave until it has been thoriughly checked. Steam could leak through the door and cause VERY SERIOUS BURNS. If you know someone at your local hospital see if they can put you in touch with one of their Biomedical Technicians. These are the folks that know how to service this piece of equipment. More than likely no one at your gas company would have the foggiest idea.
