Two Hatch Questions

Postby JohnF » Sun Dec 04, 2005 10:06 pm

I have been tweaking the hatch on my 8-ft Cubby for two days now, and I just about have it as good as I can get it...not perfect, but fairly good.

Question No. 1: I want to put two "star wheel" hatch supports in, but am uncertain how long they should be...I see Austin Hardware has them in various lengths. Any recommendations?

Question No. 2: I want to install two side pull latches to securely hold the hatch tight when in transit...again, what model (and source) do you suggest?

Progress Report: I have the cabinetry about 90% done...have hinges and knobs from Rockkler on hand, and have begun staining the oak. I have all the insulation done, and could begin skinning with aluminum if I had it...have not gone to the big city to get it yet. All interior wood work/walls/cabinets/ trim, etc, is done. Have not even thought much about the doors yet..not anxious for them...I suspect they might be a bigger pain than the hatch.

Thanks for your suggestions.

John,

If you used the largest star-wheel offered by Austin, the 6229, it fits the layout I did some time ago for gas struts:

The gas spring shown has an extended length of 28", so the Austin 6229 at 27 3/4" will give virtually the same result. The compressed length shown of 17" is well more than the Austin's 14 3/4", so there is no chance of the strut bottoming out.

I got my latches from Austin Hardware. I don't remember the model number. But this is what they look like.

I used this latch from McMasterCarr. They come in several sizes with pricing from $9 to $16 each in Stainless Steel.
