McDave, sorry to hear about the shelf collapse. Glad nothing was damaged. Are you nailing or using screws on framing. I was going to screw and glue to ensure things don't vibrate apart, or is that overkill and the paneling will hold it together?

Btw.. the Mrs. rides in the truck. :-)

Hey Don,
I guess I would say "Too much is never enough". If you have the time, screw it, glue it, tattoo it. Obviously it would suck to have to do major repairs like framing after you have her all trimmed out and shiny. You know there will be some shaking and twisting and vibrating going on in there. And then once you start towing its gonna be really crazy! Just sayin'.... ;)

Thanks for the flooring info. I LOVE the way it looks. That ramp looks great as a wall, IMO. I'm sure the wife is rolling her eyes right now. We should really get that checked out. May be some sort of seizure. She does that almost every time I say I like something. Weird, huh?

I went to Home Depot after work and got lucky. I found non-pressure treated 2x2's in bundles of 6. I got two bundles and a bundle of 12 1X2's to start the framing with. They are all very straight... so hopefully they will stay that way! :) I am going to screw and glue all the framing. There really isn't that much framing to do and why not make sure it holds up! I should have some good progress pics this weekend. I have a three day weekend with the 4th Holiday in there!

McDave, I used Roberts 2310 adhesive when I put the floor down. The HD Website says to use Roberts 2310 or Roberts 2315. I used the 1/16 trowel recommended.

Most lumber will stay straight once it is framed. Once in awhile a really bad one will still twist on you. Out here in the dry west if you don't get them used they will go to crap pretty fast. I learned this the hard way. When I built our house I figured I would buy a bunk of 2X4s instead of getting them as I needed them. I think I lost about a third of them. :x Looking good! I am excited to watch the framing.

Don,

When you are ready to frame, cut the bundles of the 2x lumber loose and sort through them. It is not uncommon to see bows, crooks, kinks, cups, and twists in the lumber along with a few straight boards. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_warping) Don't despair. Bows generally can be straightened when fastening paneling, drywall, etc. Cups, unless really severe, are okay to use for vertical framing. For boards with crooks, sight down the length of the board and mark the high side. When using boards with crooks for vertical framing, place the high sides to one side of the wall. Boards with kinks and twists are the hardest to deal with. Set these aside. Boards with kinks, and some boards with twists, can be sawn into shorter twisted lumber and use it for shorter length headers, blocking, etc.

When I was building my teardrop, I got about twice the work done on a 3-day weekend as I did the 2-day weekend. I hope you have the same experience.

BTW, I really like your choice of flooring.

Take care,
Tom

Happy Independence Day to all this weekend! I am looking forward to getting some build time in. Hopefully will have the AC framed in and cranked up. That's the goal!

flboy, Howdy;

Play in a somewhat safe manner, find all your 2x's to be as straight as you need'em
to be, take a bunch of pix and share'em with us. Happy 4th. X

AC Installation - Window Unit in a Cabinet

Postby flboy » Sat Jul 02, 2016 7:54 pm

The AC is in and working awesome! it was 70 degrees in there when I came inside tonight. I am going to let it run overnight to pull out the humidity and then turn it up some tomorrow and see how it does in the heat of the day. It is about 87 degrees outside even now and about 90% humidity.

Lots of pics, but I wanted to show the install. I still have to tape it all up tomorrow. I will not be paneling right away and putting the front on as I have to build all the walls still. Tomorrow I will get the Refrigerator installed below the AC. The pics do not show it, but the AC is fastened to the shelf with "L" brackets I made. The screws already existing in the AC cover hold them on and then I screwed the other side into the shelf.

The sweet thing about this AC, and my primary reason for doing the AC this way instead of the roof mount, is that it will run off my Honda 2000 generator and cool the trailer very well with enough juice left over to run other things and charge the batteries if needed.

Image

If I ever need to replace the AC and it is a different size, I will just need to cut a new face plate and new foam for the backside. It will be easy to do.

The exhaust is isolated from the intake.

Image

Drain Hose will drain down through the floor. Already draining water tonight.

Image

The sides are sealed up so the air to cool the compressor and condenser is drawn through the vent in the roof.

Image

All in. Just needs to be taped up with foil tape and then paneled when I do the paneling.

Image

The Outside View of the side and roof vents. I used the LP Gas RV Refrigerator Vents which are readily available. Trailer is going to need washing soon. Getting dirty just setting there!

I love it! Framing looks great. That is a winner my friend.
I've been wrestling with the black tank this PM. Gotta ways to go, but I intend to have that SOB in tonight, or before sunrise. Then some framing, rooftop AC install, fresh water systems, electrical. etc. etc.....I got started WAY too late on this project, so I may have to go with plan B for Iron Horse. But it ain't over till it's over... T minus 11 days and counting

fkboy, Howdy;

Good to see ya got your framing done before the 2X2's could start their limp spaghetti look alike contest.
Always a good day when that happens.
What type of storage are you planing for under the a/c?
Keep them fingers-n-toes intact...

PS. I've gone an smoked a 9.775# pork shoulder to be served as Pulled pork for our 'covered
dish' 4th celebration. Some of the others are doin' hot dogs an 'burgers, one is doing homemade
ice cream. Should be a good one.
