I'm going to start a build on a pop-up chassis that I acquired last summer. The other, smaller pop-up chassis I have is about to be sold. It was going to be my next teardrop but a buyer came along and the price was right for him and I. The proceeds of that chassis will help get a start on the new build.

The chassis I will build on is 83" wide with the "wings" forward and aft of the wheels and the bed frame is 130.5" long. It has a 4' tongue. It is in good shape and has been wire brushed, rust treated and repainted.

The original step was mounted a little too far back so I will have some supports welded closer to the front.

I'll try to reuse the original plastic fenders as they will help keep weight down.

And I don't know what kind of tongue jack mounts here. I'm not sure if I will like it or it's price so I will likely weld a triangle plate behind the coupler and mount another Jack-E-Up mount and an a-frame jack. I like the Jack-E-Up I mounted on the woodie.

I'm still drawing plans so I am not sure how this will come together just yet. It will likely be mothballed for the winter months but I will update the build as I make decisions. I was thinking about building a Compact III clone but the side entrance doesn't really fit that plan. I'd still like to do a pop top somehow and will look at options.

I'm experimenting with foam joints as the wall foam will stand on end and join on their long sides. I did a butt joint test with 2" and PL Premium with good results. I'll have to see where interior walls are to help keep that structure rigid.

The urgency of this build has disappeared as my wife just bought an expandable (hybrid) camper. This build was supposed to take the place of that camper but...

A first draft of what I am going for. Layout is similar to the Compact III but with a side entrance so I don't know how a pop top would work. Sorry for the poor readability.

Two single beds with storage below. A small kitchen with a possible gas oven, two burner stove top and a small sink that serves the bathroom and kitchen. A 12v fridge could possibly be installed under one of the beds or under the galley sink. Not exactly the proper efficient kitchen triangle scheme but workable. Bath would be a wet bath with tile shower pan and a homemade toilet based on the Separett style pot.

In thinking about similar build, I find the center at the end door seems to be more efficent use of space. I like the Bowlus design with door front and center and bed in a kind of rear "V".
