4x8 ----> 5x10 ?

4x8 ----> 5x10 ?

I realize that this is probably a somewhat ridiculous question, but can a 5x10 teardrop be built on a 4x8 frame? Why?

:lol:

Fair enough. Alright, then, HOW would one go about doing that? Raise the frame? Build the deck out over the wheels? Is it possible to do it without building over the wheels?

Replace the axle with a wider one if you don't want to build out over it, otherwise you would need to build over the axle. as far the the floor goes, just build the floor bigger than the trailer and let it over hang a tad , no biggie!

It's easy enough to build out over the wheels. If you use a harbor freight chassis, your teardrop will probably be closer to 66" wide. See my Escape Hatch to see how I did it... http://www.mikenchell.com/WWEH_Photo_Album/

Stretching it to 10' is a little bit tougher. It really helps if you can start with a 4x10 trailer chassis.

One of the things you have to be concerned about is that you don't build a larger floor on a smaller chassis, and end up with the trampoline effect.

If you are using a H.F. Frame I strongly suggest you use "Nobodys" method of reinforcing the tongue. There are pics in my album of Harvey's repair.

What about building a 4 x 10 on a 4 x 8 trailer? Can it be done without a lot of reworking?

Not too much rework on this one. 2 of the cross members used in the sides to extend them and the axle moved back. Had to drill a few holes. Actual frame length 117", 2X4 on each end during the build brought the length to 10 feet.

Here is a 5x10 on a 5x8 trailer I simply cantalievered the front 2' and extended the tongue.

It would be even easier to cantaliver 1 foot to the front and 1 foot to the rear. This may make a tongue modification unnecessary depending on the trailer

The Ladybug is 6 X10 on a 4X8 TSC frame with no under framing beyond the trailer itself 8). We just cut off the fenders and built over the wheels

My 5x10, on a 4x8 HF frame:
Image

The front and back actually only overhang the trailer frame by a few inches at the bottom. A foot or so up, though, they overhang a foot. No reason I couldn't have dropped straight down and gotten more length at the bottom; I just liked the curves.

The floor is built on a 4 inch thick torsion box that extends out over the wheels. The 4 inches gives me enough height that I don't have the wheels poking into the sleeping area. The torsion box is 1/4 ply on the bottom, then 1x4, then 3/8 inch ply for the floor. The 3/8 ply is plenty stiff to sleep on.
In anything at all, perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away.

Heck, I'm putting a 6.5x12 on a 4x8 frame.

I extended the tongue of the standard HF trailer out an additional 3' to accomplish this. I also flipped the axle to drop the height by about 6". Both mods are necessary for such a large overhang, or the trailer would jacknife at any turn, or might be "tippy." I haven't hit any issues whatsoever so far. I might not even use a substructure below the floor; 5/8" ply seems to be holding the edges quite well at this point.

Hey! where did you get those moon caps? Are those on the standard HF 12" wheels?
